A very small quantity of salt added to the water in which flowers are laced, adds 'considerably to their duration. There are many bulbous-rooted o'wers which flourish best in the immediate vicinity of the sea. Mr. Edwin Greville remarked, in 1824, that some common salt applied at the rate of 16 bushels per acre to a portion of a bed of stocks, in hrs garden at Wyaston, in Derb shire, made them grow most decidedly stronger and finer, and bloom' muc more perfectly than those growing In the same bed unsalted. It is a common custom with the importers of exotic plants to dip cuttings' in salt water. Before the adoption of this plan, they almost invariably perished in the passage.
