Excerpt from The Pioneer History of Meigs County, Vol. 1 of 1 In 1819 Meigs county was set off from Gallia county, and assumed importance. A court house and jail were built in Chester, the county seat. Courts of Common Pleas were held judges were appointed, county officers were elected - auditor, treasurer, recorder, sheriff and clerk of the courts. Township officers were chosen - esquires and constables, clerk, treas urer, assessor, trustees, school directors and supervisors. The discomforts of pioneer life had ceased. The people enjoyed comfortable homes, with growing families. From 1820 to 1830, there was an inflow of newcomers, representing all pur suits, civil and educational, lawyers, doctors, preachers and teachers. Farms changed owners, and new customs were introduced. The fertile Letart bottoms sent flatboats laden with produce annually on trips to the South, New Orleans being the final mart. The traders returning by keelboat or steamboat brought sugar and molasses, rice and coffee for the merchants and communities. Excerpt from Pioneer History of Medina County The earliest records of humanity are found in the Sacred Scripture, and for that reason have a strong claim on our diligent study. Next to inspired history, our own town, our own county, our own State, our own common country and the deeds of our fore fathers who first settled and improved the land or country we call our own, should receive our notice. To Americans, a knowledge of American history is essential. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Pioneer History of Wise County: From Red Men to Railroads Twenty Twenty Years of Intrepid History Beyond a half century of time has intervened since the drama of settlement was enacted on the pioneer stage of Wise County The memory of the events are growing dim in the minds of the remaining actors, who themselves are dropping, one by one, behind the scenes, never to return again before the foot-lights of time. Recognition of these somber truths has led to the compilation of the facts introduced in this book. The language used is inartistic, yet the facts themselves are there and must remain. For the errors of composition glaring forth from every page, it would be appropriate to apologize, but such an act would convict the writer of attitudinizing as a professional in the art of composition, a position that is at once waived and disclaimed. It has profoundly gratified me to be the means of the perpetuation of the lives of the pioneer fathers, their loyal acts and doings, into indestructible record, and while the struc ture is humiliating, it is none the less true that the opportunity to perform so felicitous a service has been responded to with the gratitude that a recognition of the high merit of the general task confers. Excerpt from Pioneers, Vol. 1: A Record of the Moore-Downey-Cowger Families, Who Were Pioneers of White County, Indiana, and Their Ancestors The Rev. James Power, D. D., was born in Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1726. His father was a substantial farmer who had emigrated early in life from the north of Ireland. It is believed that James obtained his preparation for college at the Fag's Manor School, then in the hands of the Rev. John Blair, an eminent scholar, and one of the most distinguished and successful ministers of his day. At an early age he went to the college of Nassau Hall, at Princeton, New Jersey, where he graduated in the fall of 1766. The President of the institution, the Rev. Sam uel Finley, had died a few months before. Mr. Power was one of eight students who bore the body to the grave. Excerpt from Biographical Memoirs of Greene County, Ind, Vol. 3: With Reminiscences of Pioneer Days Dr. Mcintosh recites with much interest and enthusi asm! The story of pioneer life in the wilderness of Greene county when he was a boy. He says that his mother, whose memory he reveres, was, in combination with all womanly virtues of her day, an expert at the wheel and loo-m, and that for many years she spun the flax and wool yarn, and wove the cloth with which to clothe the family, taking the former from the matured stalk and the latter from the sheep's back. Nothing was then known of the wonderful machinery which has revolutionized.manufac turing in all lines of human industry. The application of steam power was then in the experimental stage, while electricity as a motive power was then not dreamed of by the most advanced scientists.
