Excerpt from The Past, Present and Future of the Society of Friends In a measure of that love which would gather all from their outward wanderings in search of the living among the dead, to the inward life and saving power of Truth, I would affectionately call our attention to that living way wherein our worthy forefathers were led to blessedness and peace, as well as to some of the causes which have operated in producing our lapsed condition, as a religious people professing, above all others, a quiet waiting, and humble dependence upon the enlivening, enlightening power of divine grace; which, it is testified, hath appeared to all men, as their in* ward, spiritual teacher, monitor, and guide. It was their faithfulness to this essential duty of humble, dependent waiting upon God, that Christ his dear Son might be made unto them wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption, that made our worthy forefathers that mighty power for good, in turning men from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, which characterized them, as they truly were, the friends of truth; for they were united in the one faith, which works by love to the purifying of the heart, unto, and in co-operation with, the great and holy Head of the living church, who wrought m and through them, both to will and to do of his own good pleasure. Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1: Part 3 We have used the term murder, and used it advisedly; for the martyrdom of the three Friends on Boston Common had been perpetrated contrary to the laws of the realm. The charter of Massachusetts in no degree empowered the local authorities to enact laws contrary to the fundamental principles of English jurisprudence and English liberty. In pursuing their despotic course, they did so likewise with the consciousness that it was repulsive to the feelings of the community. Towards the close of 1660, this was so intelligibly manifested, that for a time they deemed it prudent to suspend the operation of the law for execut ing Friends, and thus the life of Joseph Nicholson was saved. Excerpt from The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 1 To investigate the rise and to trace the progress of a particular section of the religious community is an interesting object, and when it has reference to a people such as the Society of Friends, whose principles and practices so prominently distinguish them among others of the Christian name, the interest of such a pursuit becomes greatly enhanced. The design of the following sheets is to record the history of this people in America, - a country in which they experienced the extremes of entire freedom of conscience on the one hand, and cruel religious persecution on the other. There exist at the present time on the North American continent nearly six hundred distinct religious assemblies of the Society of Friends, scattered over the region extending from Canada and Maine in the north, to the Carolinas and Tennessee in the South, and from its cities and ports on the Atlantic to the countries lying west of the Mississippi. These compose in all seven separate and independent Yearly Meetings, and form in the aggregate four-fifths of the whole number of this people in the world. The consideration of this fact is calculated therefore to excite an inquiry such as that to which this work is devoted. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The early Quaker movement was remarkable for its prolific use of the printing press. Carefully orchestrated by a handful of men and women who were the movement's leaders, printed tracts were an integral feature of the rapid spread of Quaker ideas in the 1650s. Drawing on very rich documentary evidence, this book examines how and why Quakers were able to make such effective use of print. As a crucial element in an extensive proselytising campaign, printed tracts enabled the emergence of the Quaker movement as a uniform, national phenomenon. The book explores the impressive organization underpinning Quaker pamphleteering and argues that the early movement should not be dismissed as a disillusioned spiritual remnant of the English Revolution, but was rather a purposeful campaign which sought, and achieved, effective dialogue with both the body politic and society at large.

Excerpt from The Early Friends and Their Services in America: An Address Read Before the Friends Institute for Young Men, Philadelphia, Second Month 15, 1883 Two hundred and thirty-five years ago the Religious Society of Friends began to be known in England. Two hundred years ago this Province was first settled by William Penn. Of the latter event we have lately heard much, of the former but little 5 and yet the latter was so much the natural sequence of the former, that the history of the one is incomplete with out the history of the other. I propose, therefore, this evening to speak of three men, each of whom was prominent in the early history of the Society of Friends, and each of whom had somewhat to do with the settlement of Pennsylvania and its vicinity. I allude to George Fox, Robert Barclay and William Penn. I am well aware that to some who are present this account will have for them all the familiarity of a thrice-told tale. I cannot but believe that to others, and especially to the younger members of this Institute, there will be some facts mentioned which are new to them, and I am strong in the conviction that it will do no harm to any of us often to be reminded what manner of men they were to whom as Friends, and as Pennsylvanians, we owe so much.
