Excerpt from The Past, Present, and Future of the Republic The president named his prime minister. He had three courses to take in the choice of his cabinet: He might select it in the ranks of the Republicans of Feb mary, and among the moderate members of the Provisional Government. He might take his ministers from the ranks of the men of 1830, suspected from their situation of natural resentments against the revolution which had overturned them. Excerpt from The Negro: Past, Present, and Future The object of this book is to place the 1lw before the American public just as he lives and moves in the South. His racial peculiarities and limitations are re lated with no malice toward the race, but for the benefit of both races, in order that the white people of the Republic may ih vestigate and see the negro as others see and know him. Mistaken ideas regarding the race are more hurtful to the negro than the white man, and if this book can correct only a few mistakes made in the past, its mission to both races will be fulfilled. Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. Excerpt from The Republic of the Future And in regard to the discussion on bills, I think that one speech in favor of and one in opposition to, is quite sufficient for any measure. For again, we have the press, with its staff of trained and able writers, who are accustomed to grasp the main points in any case and present them in a condensed and easily-digested shape to its readers, who, absorbing their opinions with their coffee, but always exercising their own judgment, are prepared to decide on any measure before the nation, State, or village - for the people themselves decide what measures in the different legislatures shall or 'shall not become laws, their servants merely acting as clerks, in that part of the business. The bill being introduced, it is numbered and put away for the present, and telegraph and press combine to inform the people throughout the country that bill has been intro duced, and the press make their comments on it, as usual. Should the proposed measure conflict with the interests of any community, the member from that district will doubtless be notified by a majority of the halls, through the press, as usual - for he does nothing officially without this instruction - to oppose the measure in a speech, and if several members are thus directed to do so, let them select, by lot or other wise, among themselves, which shall do it. If no speeches are desired to be made against the bill, then none are made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Rational Communism: The Present and the Future Republic of North America Since the time of Sir Thomas More, theories in advance of the current ideas of the day have been contemptuously styled Utopian; but history clearly shows that all the great changes which have thus far taken place in the world, resulting in human prog ress, have been foreshadowed and set in motion by what were at first termed utopian or ideal follies. Since mankind have been continually making such mistakes in the past, is it not just possible that their political, industrial, and social systems have not as yet reached absolute perfection, and that better sys tems for the regulation of society may still be de vised than those now in vogue? Here, I trust, a few words in regard to myself may be excused, as showing with how little sympathy I at one time in my life regarded this hated Communism. Excerpt from The Republic of the Future: Or Socialism a Reality You may remember, perhaps, that before starting I found myself in very grave doubt as to which route to take - whether to come by balloon or by tunnel. As the latter route would enable me to enjoy an entirely novel spectacle, that of viewing sub-marine scenery, I chose, and wisely I now know, to come by the Pneu matic Tube Electric Company. The comforts and luxuries of this sub-marine route are beyond belief. The perfection of the contrivances for supplying hot and cold. Air, for instance, during the journey, are such that the passengers are enabled to have almost any temperature at com mand. The cars are indeed marked 70 Fahr., 80 and One buys one's seat according. Excerpt from The Republic, or a History of the United States of America in the Administrations: From the Monarchic Colonial Days to the Present Times When public characters have passed away from the stage of life, and the applause of friendship, as well as the malice of enemies, is heard no more, it has ever been the prerogative of history to rejudge their actions. Elizabeth Hamilton, the charming writer of the Life of Agrippina, puts this sentiment into the mouth of Cordas, a historian. When was there a. Time in human history that the evil, as well as the good, did not live in hope of having their deeds and principles held in higher and more gratifying esteem among other generations of men? The Future has always been the limitless haven of the imagination. In some of its many oblivious recesses the wretched and the wrong have ever looked for escape from what they were, for a reversal of the just judgment of their fellows; and the true and the wronged have believed that here a revision and correction of the misjudgments of their contemporaries would afford them ample compensation for the pangs of the past. From the author of Eichmann in Jerusalem and The Origins of Totalitarianism, “a book to think with through the political impasses and cultural confusions of our day” (Harper’s Magazine) Hannah Arendt’s insightful observations of the modern world, based on a profound knowledge of the past, constitute an impassioned contribution to political philosophy. In Between Past and Future Arendt describes the perplexing crises modern society faces as a result of the loss of meaning of the traditional key words of politics: justice, reason, responsibility, virtue, and glory. Through a series of eight exercises, she shows how we can redistill the vital essence of these concepts and use them to regain a frame of reference for the future. To participate in these exercises is to associate, in action, with one of the most original and fruitful minds of the twentieth century.
