Most of the "wonders" of our ancient past have come down to us unencumbered by written information. In particular, this is the case of the Great Pyramid of Giza and of many other ancient Egyptian monuments. However, there is no doubt as to the interest of their builders in the celestial cycles: the "cosmic order" was indeed the true basis of the pharaoh's power. This book takes the reader on a chronological journey through ancient Egypt to explore the relationship between astronomy, landscape, and power during the most flourishing periods of ancient Egyptian civilization. Using the lens of archaeoastronomy, Giulio Magli reexamines the key monuments and turning points of Egyptian architecture and history, such as the solar deification of King Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid, the Hatshepsut reign, and the Amarna revolution.

The volume is the first of two complementary volumes that explore Abydos through the lenses of the latest archaeological, archival and collections research, building upon a colloquium and workshop held at the British Museum in 2015. Volume 2 presents a focussed view on Abydos in the post-pharaonic period. Chosen as the burial ground for the first kings of Egypt, Abydos became a site of great antiquity, and its ancient sanctity may have conferred legitimacy on the individuals buried there. The site soon became the cult centre for Egypt's most popular god, Osiris, who ruled the netherworld and guaranteed every Egyptian eternal life after death. As a result of continued ritual performance, endowments and pilgrimage, a vast landscape of chapels and tombs, temples and towns, developed. For millennia, Abydos was one of the most consecrated sites of Egypt. The contributions in this volume will address the social and cultural dynamics of an ever-changing landscape serving this unique ritual narrative.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ...deity Nery, wearing two feathers on the head, and holding the ankh. On the top of the shrine is a decoration of alternate feathers and snakes. CHAPTER III. The Passages. 18. Pl. XII. The sloping passage leading from the hall towards the Temple of Sety was inscribed on the South side with the xviith chapter, on the North side with the xcixth chapter, of the Book of the Dead. Above the inscription on each side was a frieze of figures of which it was possible to copy only one, from the north side. The rapid silting up of the passage by heavy falls of sand and stones made it impossible to copy more than a few lines of the inscriptions, which are only enough to show the chapters from which they are taken. The xcixth chapter is the Chapter of bringing the Makhent boat; the xviith is one of the most ancient chapters, of which the meaning was so obscure, even in the earliest times of which we have any knowledge of it, that it is accompanied by a running commentary by ancient theologians. By degrees, the commentary became confounded with the text, which then required a fresh commentary. In Renouf's translation (P.S.B.A.) the original text, so far as it can be ascertained, and the commentaries, are printed in different type, enabling the reader to distinguish between them at a glance. The lintel or roofing stone, which still remains in position, was painted in black on a grey ground. It was probably the intention of the builders to engrave the hieroglyphs, but it was left, like the east side of the North passage, merely sketched in. The names, which are determined with the sign of a star, are those of the dekans, and are interesting as none have hitherto been found of the time of Merenptah. The earliest known are in the tomb of Sety 1, and in the...
