In the first place, when in 1915 they honoured me with an invita tion to be a Haskell Lecturer and suggested for topic The Originality of the Christian Message, ' they opened up for me afresh a singularly fruitful field of inquiry, the captivating interest of which went to alleviate the distrae tions and anxieties arising out of the Great War. Never has there been a time such as this; the world needs truth! It is time for this book!
