Excerpt from The Organization Problem of Jewish Community Life in America In the discussion of this topic we must at the outset assume that there is valid reason for the existence of distinctly Jewish communities wherever a minyan (at least ten adult Jews) dwell in one place, because their interests in some respects are distinct from the interests of other people living in the same place. These special interests may be religious, educational and philanthropic - never political. It is cause for satisfaction that the Jews of this country have never presented a homogeneous attitude, as Jews, toward any political question, except where such a question involved the rights and dignities of American citizenship, as in the Russian passport matter. Here the Jews united to secure the abrogation of the treaty with Russia, because that treaty, in discriminating against the Jews of the United States, was an affront to American citizenship. Attempts on the part of politicians to create Jewish political clubs and groups have met uniformly with such vehement resentment on the part of all Jewish elements as to indicate unmistakably that in politics the Jews do not desire to be a community. Political elections have shown that Jews are divided on political questions so freely that there cannot be the barest suspicion that racial or religious considerations at any time constitute a basis for political affiliations. In religious matters and in philanthropic affairs they have followed distinct lines, quite like other religious and racial elements in the population. But in these fields they have not been united; in fact, there have been such sharp divisions as to make the word "community," as descriptive of their organized charities, an inaccurate term, if not an actual misnomer. The reasons for these divisions are to be traced ultimately to the fact that the Jews of America, though ethnologically one race, come from many different countries of the globe and naturally possess differences of traditions, customs, theologies, language, outline, and frequently even of physique. Excerpt from The Jewish Community of New York City Jewish Defence Association began an agitation also on behalf of what was then characterized as an American Jewish Congress. The leaders of the Relief Committee too had begun to feel the necessity of an organization to take the place of individual effort and to relieve the individual of too much responsibility. The prime movers in the creation of an American Jewish Congress accordingly believed it to be their duty to give up their own plan, and to labor for the creation of a general organization. This eventually became the American Jewish Committee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A revolutionary book by a revolutionary thinker. Mordecai Kaplan was a true polymath, a philosopher, an early student of sociology and a learned rabbi in his own right. He saw in America a community within Judaism who needed a faith and a community which was relatable, applicable and possible to integrate fully into modern life. Judaism as a Civilization, aside from having launched a whole religious tradition, is full of sublimely formed arguments, a sense of the historical and theological situation of Judaism and the philosophical approach of medieval and modern theorists. Skipping lightly on from a review of Locke and Voltaire, Kaplan ventures into the economic realities of supporting a community and an accompanying religious apparatus, and the theological openness required to allow unfettered excellence. Kaplan challenged the normative nature of Jewish law, proposed a less literal conception of God and a fresh and egalitarian approach to the application of Jewish tradition in the modern world. He takes the position that Judaism and its adherents need to take radical action to reinvigorate community and faith and is inspiring in his advice. 'More dangerous to Judaism by far than challenge, opposition and even misinterpretation is the deadening acquiescence of apathy. The lack of controversial writing about Judaism, especially in English, does not mean that there is inward peace in Israel; it betokens the peace of stagnation. This spiritual stagnation in America must be disturbed, and if some of the views expressed in this book will produce the slightest ripple in American-Jewish thinking, the book will have served a useful purpose'.
