In the fertile years 1900 to 1920 labor in America was pressing forward with great strides under the guiding banner of the A.F. of L. The Year 1901, just another good year for mechanics, bootmakers, teamsters, mechanics, was a significant year for farm laborers. In 1901 a San Francisco draymans' strike called attention to the organization of farm workers. The demand for labor throughout the Coast and in the Wheat Belt was increasing. Wages were rising, and workers in the fields began to have a new awareness. As early as 1901 the employers got busy and a plan for a "closed season" in strikes for harvest time, was offered.
