Download The Organ Works of Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) and Musical-rhetorical Analysis and Theory Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Throughout history, rhetoricians, philosophers, poets, and musicians have extolled the relationship between language and music. Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, music theorists applied rhetorical principles to melodic design, harmony, and form in order to harness the power of rhetoric in music. Teachers in Germany often instructed their young students to use musical rhetoric in hopes of moving audiences to various passions. This first part of this study summarizes the musica poetica tradition. In the second part, I examine modern adaptations of these historical theories and modern musical-rhetorical analyses of Dietrich Buxtehude's organ works. From these approaches and more modern theories, I synthesize an analytical approach that addresses musical rhetoric in Buxtehude's organ works. The thesis culminates with some exemplary analyses and suggestions for future research.

Download The Stylus Phantasticus and Free Keyboard Music of the North German Baroque Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The concept of stylus phantasticus (orfantastic style ) as it was expressed in free keyboard music of the north German Baroque forms the focus of this book. Exploring both the theoretical background to the style and its application by composers and performers, Paul Collins surveys the development of Athanasius Kircher‘s original concept and its influence on music theorists such as Brossard, Janovka, Mattheson, and Walther. Turning specifically to fantasist composers of keyboard works, the book examines the keyboard toccatas of Merulo, Fresobaldi, Rossi and Froberger and their influence on north German organists Tunder, Weckmann, Reincken, Buxtehude, Bruhns, Lubeck, Bohm, and Leyding. The free keyboard music of this distinguished group highlights the intriguing relationship at this time between composition and performance, the concept of fantasy, and the understanding of originality and individuality in seventeenth-century culture.

Download Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This research is an analysis of the ways in which the North German Lutheran composer Dietrich Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707) incorporated affections and rhetoric into his sacred vocal works and specifically the Membra Jesu nostri (BuxWV75). The use of affections and rhetoric in the compositions of North German composers developed out of a tradition called musica poetica. Musica poetica flourished primarily because of three German Lutheran precepts: (1) the divine nature of music, (2) the ideas of affections and temperaments, and (3) the power of rhetorical devices in oration. This research uses these three precepts as the tools for analyzing Buxtehude's sacred vocal works, and specifically the cycle of cantatas entitled Membra Jesu nostri, in order to better comprehend the composer's creative process, his feelings about the text, and how to more accurately perform the music. This research shows that Buxtehude often composed using a palette of devices born out of a musica poetica tradition steeped in affections and rhetoric and that understanding this use of affections and rhetoric serves to illuminate how he composed, how he viewed the texts, and indicates elements of proper performance practice.
