Educational reforms have been introduced by the Ontario government since 1995, including a new standardized curriculum. This thesis examines the Ontario elementary curriculum for what and whose knowledge is being legitimized in schools. Using a critical anti-racism perspective, this study interrogates racialized power relations. A combined content and critical discourse analysis explores how the language of the curriculum is exclusionary, how Eurocentricism and Whiteness are propagated through the content, and how the history and knowledge of racial minorities is rendered inconsequential. This study finds that White bodies are privileged in schools while racialized bodies are disempowered and thus disadvantaged. Recommendations for curriculum reform are made, alongside broader action strategies for the inclusivity and empowerment of all students.

Download Media Education Curriculum in Ontario [microform] : a Critical Analysis Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The fight to implement and teach media education in schools has been a continuous struggle since the 1940s. This thesis first explores the history of media education in respect to its definition, theory, and philosophy. It then examines the current state of media education in the Ontario education system. The underlying premise of the thesis is an argument for a media literate society and a media education that fosters critical awareness and preparation rather than protection and inoculation. In this study I apply an analytic approach from the field of media education---the Media Education Triangle---as a framework to examine the media education curriculum in Ontario. Through a close reading of the curriculum, I show how roles for teachers and students are constructed. At the same time, however, I suggest that these roles do not operate in a deterministic and consistent fashion, and that the moments of inconsistency in the curriculum may be used to extend students' critical media capacities.

Download Exploring the Integrated Curriculum Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Students demonstrate increased engagement and knowledge retention when they are able to make connections between the text and the outside world. Despite the real world not being formed into neat subjects, the Ontario curriculum is. Through integrated curriculum, Susan Drake and James Beane argue that students are better equipped to become life-long learners and global citizens. As leading professionals in the field of integrated curriculum, this document analysis utilizes inductive analysis to explore the Ontario Ministry of Educationâ s 2006 curriculum document for Language (Revised) to determine if Drake and Beaneâ s approaches are explicitly stated. Results found that neither approach was explicitly stated, although the Ministry utilized similar integrated approaches as presented by Drake, while desired student outcomes aligned with Beane. The Ontario Ministry of Education should consider the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary frameworks of Drake and Beane when producing future editions of the Ontario curriculum documents.
