Excerpt from Poultry Houses and Equipment The fundamental purpose of a poultry house is to promote the comfort and health of the stock it houses. Shelter from rain, wind, and heat, rather than protection from intense cold, is the important requirement in California. Storm-tight and Dry. - Dryness checks the development of most dis ease organisms and increases the comfort of the birds. It is therefore an important essential of a well-designed poultry house. Ventilation without Drafts - Ventilation is essential in a poultry house to supply the birds with enough fresh air to meet their body needs and to carry away the exhaled air and the unhealthful fumes arising from the droppings. Ventilation must be provided without injurious drafts from cracks, knotholes, etc., which would chill the birds while roosting and lead to colds and roup. Ventilation is needed; drafts may be dangerous. Direct Sunlight in Winter. - Sunlight increases the comfort of the birds in winter by bringing warmth and cheer into the poultry house. It is a powerful drying, disinfecting, and purifying agent, and is a natural source of ultraviolet light. In order to admit a maximum amount of direct sunlight in winter, a poultry house should face south. Where this is not feasible, a southeast facing would be second in order of desirability; and east, third. North is an undesirable direction in which to face a poultry house. Excerpt from Making a Poultry House A windbreak of some kind on the cold side of the building is a decided advantage -a wall, an evergreen hedge, a grove, or other buildings, will protect the poultry house, and, perhaps, also a portion of the runs, with benefit to the poultry. In that the family flock may range in size from half a dozen to fifty or seventy five fowls, the size of the building, and even its style, must vary to suit one's needs. A small coop, almost square, may house your flock of eight or ten, but the larger flock requires a house longer and higher, with more ample ventilation. Excerpt from Poultry-House Construction The frames of houses may be made from trees about 3 inches in diameter. The above shows a Tolman house in the course of construction. British Columbia; that the poultryman possesses a good knowledge of feeding his stock in order to secure good egg production and at the same time not force them; that the stock be of a strain which is not susceptible to any harsh climatic change that may occur in any part of the Province; and, further, that the stock has been given every. Chance to progress without any set-back from lice, mites, or disease. Unless these essentials have been attended to properly, one must not expect good, profitable egg production in any type of poultry-house. Commercial Chicken Meat and Egg Production is the 5th edition of a highly successful book first authored by Dr. Mack O. North in 1972, updated in 1978 and 1984. The 4th edition was co-authored with Donald D. Bell in 1990. The book has achieved international success as a reference for students and commercial poultry and egg producers in every major poultry producing country in the world. The 5th edition is essential reading for students preparing to enter the poultry industry, for owners and managers of existing poultry companies and for scientists who need a major source of scientifically based material on poultry management. In earlier editions, the authors emphasized the chicken and its management. The 5th edition, with the emphasis shifted to the commercial business of managing poultry, contains over 75% new material. The contributions of 14 new authors make this new edition the most comprehensive such book available. Since extensive references are made to the international aspects of poultry management, all data are presented in both the Imperial and Metric form. Over 300 tables and 250 photos and figures support 62 chapters of text. New areas include processing of poultry and eggs with thorough discussions of food safety and further processing. The business of maintaining poultry is discussed in chapters on economics, model production firms, the use of computers, and record keeping. Updated topics include: breeders and hatchery operations; broiler and layer flock management; replacement programs and management of replacements; nutrition; and flock health. New chapters address flock behavior, ventilation, waste management, egg quality and egg breakage. Other new features include a list of more than 400 references and a Master List of the tables, figures, manufacturers of equipment and supplies, research institutions, books and periodicals, breeders, and trade associations. Commercial growers will find the tables of data of particular interest; scientists will be able to utilize the extensive references and to relate their areas of interest to the commercial industry's applications; and students will find that the division of the book into 11 distinct sections, with multiple chapters in each, will make the text especially useful.

“This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

This classic reference for poultry nutrition has been updated for the first time since 1984. The chapter on general considerations concerning individual nutrients and water has been greatly expanded and includes, for the first time, equations for predicting the energy value of individual feed ingredients from their proximate composition. This volume includes the latest information on the nutrient requirements of meat- and egg-type chickens, incorporating data on brown-egg strains, turkeys, geese, ducks, pheasants, Japanese quail, and Bobwhite quail. This publication also contains new appendix tables that document in detail the scientific information used to derive the nutrient requirements appearing in the summary tables for each species of bird.
