Excerpt from The Novels, Stories and Sketches of F. Hopkinson Smith My probe has not gone very far below the surface. The task would have been uncongenial and the result superfluous. The record of the resources, religions, politics, governments, social conditions, and misfortunes of Mexico already enlarges many folios and lies heavy on many shelves, and I hope on some consciences. I have preferred rather to present what would appeal to the painter and idler. A land of white sunshine redolent with flowers; a land of gay costumes, crumbling churches, and old convents; a land of kindly greetings, of extreme courtesy, of open, broad hospitality. I have delighted my soul with the swaying of the lilies in the sunlight, the rush of the roses crowding over mouldy walls, the broadleaved palms cooling the shadows, and have wasted none of my precious time searching for the lizard and the mole crawling at their roots. Excerpt from The Novels, Stories and Sketches of F. Hopkinson Smith: The Fortunes of Oliver Horn; Vol. II From the institution's earlier beginnings in the old house on Bond Street, to its flight from the loft close to Grace Church, and then to the abandoned building opposite the old hotel near Washington Square, where Amos Cobb always stayed when he came to New York, and so on down to its own home on Broadway, its history had been one long struggle for recognition and support. Excerpt from The Novels, Stories and Sketches of F. Hopkinson Smith: Colonel Carter and Other Tales of the South HE dinner was at the colonel's, an old fashioned, partly furnished, two story house nearly a century old which crouches down behind a larger and more modern dwelling front ing on Bedford Place within a stone's throw of the tall clock tower of Jefferson Market. The street entrance to this curious abode is marked by a swinging wooden gate opening into a narrow tunnel which dodges under the front house. It is an uncanny sort of passageway, mouldy and wet from a long-neglected leak overhead, and is lighted at night by a rusty lantern with dingy glass sides. On sunny days this gruesome tunnel frames from the street a delightful picture of a bit of the yard beyond, with the quaint colonial door and its three steps let down in a welcoming way.
