In the last decades Nordic countries have been implementing quota markets and similar instruments to manage mainly the economic performance of their fisheries. Coming from a historical situation dominated by owner-operated fishing units closely connected to their supporting communities, market-based fisheries manage-ment plays a role in promoting company-organised fishing units, non-fisher owner-ship and new social relations. Introducing market-mechanisms to distribute the lim-ited marine resources is therefore not just a change in the technical regulation. It is an active engagement in social change. The publication reviews the Nordic experiences with market-based fisheries management and discusses the implications for managers and future recruitment.

Download Labelling Strategies in Environmental Policy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Eco-labelling programmes have been in existence for many years but their recent growth now extends to many products and services. The academic literature has grown in response and there have been several theoretical and empirical advances. This volume presents the best of previously published research on the design and effects of eco-labelling programmes. Whilst concentrating on the economic literature, the articles also approach the topic from a psychological, sociological and political point of view. Part One focuses on a range of theoretical developments, Part Two on empirical measurements of the effectiveness of eco-labelling, Part Three on the factors that influence the success and design of eco-labelling programmes and Part Four on the effects of eco-labelling on international trade and development.

Download Nordic fisheries at a crossroad Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Nordic fisheries at a crossroad explores how Nordic small-scale fisheries can develop to promote high value creation and product specialization. By looking at recent developments among small-scale but land-based food producers we suggest specialization and dedication as the main development strategies. The central notion is to break away from the price-competitive globalised fish markets and develop new products or distribution models. To succeed in this, there is a need for substantive and coordinated efforts to bridge the gap between conventional logics and the new development logics, between supply and demand. The vision should be to develop viable and composite markets for high quality and specialty fish products through dedication and specialization. Markets that go beyond the local and reach supermarkets and consumers on a national and international scale.

Download Ecolabels in the Nordic Fisheries and Aquaculture Industry Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
IUU fishing has been a major nuisance in Nordic fisheries for many years, and it has proved difficult to get rid of the problem by governmental controls alone. Engaging consumers and the market however, could be a supplement to public actions, and make the loopholes smaller for this kind of black market economy. Ecolabeling is a tool which could contribute to responsible behaviour throughout the industry, and give the consumer the option of making informed choices. For the industry however, choosing the most relevant ecolabel can be difficult as there are several labels available on the market, and they emphasize different aspects of the sustainability concept. In this book prepared for the Nordic Council of Ministers by Det Norske Veritas a review of the most relevant ecolabels is presented, as well as an assessment of each label against a defined set of criteria. The intention of this publication is thus that it could be of assistance for businesses which are considering which ecolabels to choose for their products, and also to stimulate further discussions and professional development in the Nordic seafood sector in the realms of documentation, labelling and tracing.
