Excerpt from The New Life in Christ Jesus: Essays on Subjects Relating to Spiritual Life; To Which Is Added, Listening to Jesus, And, the Law of Love The pure Love of God (a doctrine which has been strongly asserted from the time of St. Katherine of Genoa and by others before her down to the present day, but not always Without causing considerable vexation to its supporters, as in the case of Fenelon): Union with God complete and absolute: Transformation into His likeness (which presupposes the extirpation of self-love, or the self principle, the root of all human misery, for if there were no self-will there would neither be Hell nor Devil, says our author), that we may love God as He loves us - that is, so far as is competent to finite natures: in other words, a complete new Birth and new Life, - that is the basis of our author's spiritual teaching. Excerpt from The New Life in Christ Jesus All of the matter composing this book was preached to my congregations in my two pastorates at Dallas, Texas, and Northfield, Massachusetts, and all, save the address on "The Imparted Life," were published first in the "Dallas News." These, re-printed in "The Christian Worker's Magazine," awoke a desire which seemed to be unusually widespread that these teachings concerning the New Life in Christ Jesus might be collected into a book. This, by arrangement with The Bible Institute Colportage Association, has now been done. The book is here and now committed to the care of Him whom it seeks to exalt in the fervent prayer that through His grace it may show the way into happy, victorious, fruitful Christian living to many in bondage. Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Jesus and Life When our Lord came to earth, many were waiting for the Kingdom of God. So Clear-cut was their picture of the Kingdom that when it did come in another guise they did not recognise it. Once more men are waiting for the Kingdom of God. We have prayed for revival; and we can conceive no revival which does not express itself in repentance, faith, and prayer and in a deepened loyalty to the organised associations for Christian worship and service. But in the New Testament we read not only of the Christ but also of the Baptist. There were men who were not far from the Kingdom, yet who had been baptised only with John's baptism, who still lacked the quickening breath of Holy Spirit, did not even know of the existence of Holy Spirit. In The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind (1994) Mark Noll offered a forthrightly critical assessment of the state of evangelical thinking and scholarship. Now, nearly twenty years later, in a sequel more attuned to possibilities than to problems, Noll updates his earlier assessment and charts a positive way forward for evangelical scholarship. Noll's Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind shows how the orthodox Christology confessed in the ancient Christian creeds, far from hindering or discouraging serious scholarship, can supply the motives, guidance, and framework for learning. Christian faith, Noll argues, can richly enhance intellectual engagement in the various academic disciplines -- and he demonstrates how by applying his insights to the fields of history (his own area of expertise), science, and biblical studies in particular. In a substantial postscript Noll candidly addresses the question How fares the "evangelical mind" today? as he highlights "hopeful signs" of intellectual life in a host of evangelical institutions, individuals, and movements. -- From publisher description.
