Excerpt from The New Jerusalem, and Its Heavenly Doctrine: From Things Heard Out of Heaven; To Which Is Prefixed Something Concerning the New Heaven and the New Earth Concerning the New Heaven and the New Earth, and What is Meant by the New Jerusalem. It is said in the Apocalypse, "I saw a New Heaven and a New Earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. And I saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a Bride adorned for her Husband. And the city had a wall great and high, which had twelve gates; and on the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, in which were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And the city itself lay four-square, whose length was as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with a reed, twelve thousand furlongs; and the length and the breadth and the height of it were equal. In the study of Christian eschatological thought, virtually no attention has been given to past interpretations of the biblical phrase the new heavens and earth. John Duff uncovers the interpretations of this phrase that were extant in seventeenth-century England. These interpretations fall into two basic camps—those that understood the phrase metaphorically and those that understood the phrase literally. Some English divines believed the new heavens and earth referred to the new age of the gospel that commenced in the first century CE. At that time, God flung open the doors of salvation to Gentiles while at the same time bringing judgment to the Jewish nation for its failure to recognize and embrace Jesus as Messiah. This epic transition was fittingly described as a new heavens and earth.A second group of English interpreters believed the phrase stood for a yet future time when the political and religious circumstances of the world would change for the betterment of the church for one thousand years. The new heavens and earth stood for a future millennium in which Christ would establish his reign over the world prior to the day of resurrection and final judgment. Theologians who accepted a literal understanding believed the new heavens and earth described the renovation of the physical creation at the final judgment. Among this group, differences of opinion existed with respect to how much of the world would need cleansing, what creatures would be restored and of what use would a renovated world serve. The idea that the earth, and not heaven, would be the final abode of the saints emerged among a few obscure writers.

Download Seeking out the Land: Land of Israel Traditions in Ancient Jewish, Christian and Samaritan Literature (200 BCE - 400 CE) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Seeking out the Land describes the study of the Holy Land in the Roman period and examines the complex connections between theology, social agenda and the intellectual pursuit. Holiness as a theological concept determines the intellectual agenda of the elite society of writers seeking to describe the land, as well as their preoccupation with its physical aspects and their actual knowledge about it. Ze'ev Safrai succeeds in examining all the ancient monotheistic literature, both Jewish and Christian, up to the fourth century CE, and in demonstrating how all the above-mentioned factors coalesce into a single entity. We learn that in both religions, with all their various subgroups, the same social and religious factors were at work, but with differing intensity.

Download The Dead Sea New Jerusalem Text Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
"The Aramaic Dead Sea New Jerusalem Text (NJ) survives in seven fragmentary copies: 1Q32, 2Q24, 4Q554, 4Q554a, 4Q555, 5Q15, and 11Q18. Lorenzo DiTommaso presents an edition of the 4Q NJ fragments, including a reconstruction of the text preserved in overlapping copies. He also discusses the genre of the NJ and the order of its material, its antecedents and parallels in ancient urban design, and its place among the many ancient Jewish and Christian literary expressions of the New Jerusalem. Finally, he examines the eschatological horizon of the NJ, its possible date of composition, and its relationship with other Dead Sea texts which describe the New Jerusalem or New Temple."--BOOK JACKET.
