We are able to discern also that the early language differentiated the negative of the sentence from the negative which formed a close compound with a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. We can tell too the classes of compounds into which in this early period the latter form of the negative entered. If we attempt to go further back than this, we can no longer speak of scientific knowledge, but must be content to ascribe to our surmises merely the character of a priori probability or possibility.
