A dying father's testimony to his children about faith, covenants, and eternal life. Navigate the Strait is an insightful look at one man’s journey through an active life of teaching in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is ending in the slow, downward spiral of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Yet his happy, sustaining faith and his love for his “all caring” Tiffany and their three children, Lincoln, Edison, and Abigail, drive his passion to finish this book. He wants his family and friends to KNOW him better after the disease will likely take his life. This book is a must for anyone who wants to teach, understand, or gain the strength to live the gospel of Jesus Christ.. You will find in it stories, ideas, and teaching examples that express the doctrine of Christ in simple ideas that make life betterI’m just a normal guy with a testimony of Jesus Christ. Then I got ALS. Bummer. ALS is taking away everything that I am good at: speaking, typing, fixing things, hugging my wife and children. I am writing this book with one finger on a mouse or with my eyes controlling my iPhone. On the bright side, I finally have something in common with Stephen Hawking. Now that my disease has reduced my life to complete dependence on others, what am I worth? Well… I am still a good teacher. I love my Savior. I love the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. I look at the gospel in a nonlinear fashion, thinking critically about how gospel teachings connect to one another and to our personal struggles. If all truth is circumscribed into one whole, we need to think deeply, and sometimes creatively, about how the gospel connects to us and to others. Since ALS will take my life, I will likely not be around to teach these ideas to my kids in the moment they need a lesson. I pray that this little book of “Dad’s testimony” will help my children and grandchildren as they grow and need answers to their questions. If you happen to read it, and if it helps you on your journey, that’s great too. When we meet, let me know what you liked. Most of my writings are about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While I present many ideas within the framework of church doctrine and culture, I hope that anyone can learn something useful from what I have learned. I am no scriptorian. I have never taught religion at BYU. I don’t know the location of the Ark, the lost tribes of Israel, the Book of Mormon cities, or Nikola Tesla’s death ray. These ideas are my own, based on my prayerful study of doctrine and scriptures. But don’t just take my word, go to the source and see for yourself! If anything in this book conflicts with living prophet, then I am wrong. Stick with the prophet. I do know that Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of all mankind. I know that he loves you and me—even when life gets hard. If you have never looked into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I encourage you to visit ComeUntoChrist.org to learn the basics. You can ask questions and even invite missionaries to visit your house and share a message with your family. You will discover that the kingdom of God has been restored to the earth in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You will hear about a living prophet of Christ on the earth who speaks with authority like Moses, Elijah or Peter. And you will learn more about Jesus Christ in the Book of Mormon as a companion to the Bible. That is what we mean when we say ”it’s true.”This book is my attempt to dive deeper into those simple truths. It is organized by topic, so feel free to jump around— and to jump out to the scriptures. I hope this book makes you happy.

During His ministration on the Mount, Christ exhorted His disciples to choose the narrow gate, not the broad one, because only the narrow path and the narrow gate lead to eternal life. Yet few individuals find it. How can we find it? To take the path towards eternal life we must embrace a change to godly living. Tomorrow might be too late. This means we must obey God's commandments, have hearts of forgiveness and be filled with the Holy Spirit, in fear of our Lord. There is no room for pride in the Kingdom of Heaven. The path towards the narrow gate can only be achieved by total submission to His mandates.

When Jack is fourteen years old he runs away from home and finds himself on Casey's boat. For the next year, Jack learns everything he can from the crew, and in particular from Casey - the captain - whom he regards above all others. Some of his lessons are codified in the lineage of literature and history found in Casey's library, some lessons Jack learns through experience, while others come directly from Casey. But, in that year, though together, Jack and Casey ultimately move in different directions. And, it seems that with each lesson Jack learns, Casey forgets. The Strait, The Narrow is a novel of ideas and ideals that proves cynicism is equally as destructive to an individual as is ignorance, and it asserts that as a matter of choice there are better and lesser - not just different - practices, governments, relationships, and people.

“[Tully] paints Admiral Nishimura's high-speed run into history with an entirely fresh palette of detail.” —James D. Hornfischer, New York Times–bestselling author of Neptune’s Inferno Surigao Strait in the Philippine Islands was the scene of a major battleship duel during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Because the battle was fought at night and had few survivors on the Japanese side, the events of that naval engagement have been passed down in garbled accounts. Anthony P. Tully pulls together all of the existing documentary material, including newly discovered accounts and a careful analysis of US Navy action reports, to create a new and more detailed description of the action. In several respects, Tully's narrative differs radically from the received versions and represents an important historical corrective. Also included in the book are a number of previously unpublished photographs and charts that bring a fresh perspective to the battle. “By giving a fuller view of the Japanese side, Tully's work forces a substantial revision of the traditional picture of the battle. Battle of Surigao Strait is not only military history based on scrupulous use of a plethora of new source materials, but is a spanking good read. Highly recommended.” —War in History “Tully has managed to trace the complicated flow of and reason for events on the nights of 24-25 October with a skill and aplomb that forces one to reconsider previously held views.” —Naval History

The first history of the special relationship between Ireland and Scotland from acclaimed historian Jonathan Bardon, based on his BBC Radio series Based on the popular BBC Ulster radio series of the same name, A Narrow Sea traces the epic sweep of Ireland's relationship with Scotland, exploring the myriad connections, correlations, personalities and antagonisms that have, over the centuries, defined the relationship between these two spirited neighbours. In 120 brief, episodic chapters, A Narrow Sea offers a stirring and panoramic view of a connection that has shaped the course of history. Roving freely across the centuries, from the first migrations of the regions' paleolithic tribes and their encounters with Greek and Roman explorers, to the grand colonial projects of the Vikings, Normans and Stuarts, this is the story of how a shared culture laid the basis for two very different nations. 'Jonathan Bardon's lively and engaging history of the interactions between Ireland and Scotland over two millennia is a vastly pleasurable read and history at its most accessible.'
