Heckewelderl says that the Nanticoke were distinguished from neighboring tribes by a darker color. \vriting at this date, if we assume the story of the Moorish admixture to have some foundation in truth, one does not have to seek far for an explanation of the dark complexion of the Nanticoke.2 It would seem that the tribe bore evidence of an African admixture before leaving Mary land, which would be before 1748, at the latest.
