A man investigates rumors of the supernatural in post-Civil War Vermont in a “stunningly twisted tale mired in history from a master of the macabre” (Booklist). Nine years have passed since the end of the American Civil War, and Silas Flood, helpless to escape its shadow, is a broken man in a broken country. In the summer of 1874, he is dispatched to the mountain village of Moriah, Vermont, to investigate sensational claims of supernatural happenings at a wayside inn. There, the brothers Thaddeus and Ambrose Lynch are said to converse with spirits and summon the dead. In Moriah, Flood encounters others like himself: a grieving couple, a childless widow. By day he questions the Lynch brothers, who prove less than forthcoming. They too are haunted by buried secrets and old ghosts. In the evenings he attends séances where the resurrected dead dance, sing, and give comfort to the living. As Flood investigates the true nature of these phenomena, he is forced to come to terms with his own past—and with the hold it has upon him. “Mills deftly jumps between narratives as the story unfolds, his prose saturating every page with dread as he teases out his characters’ secrets and lies. [An] intense novel.” —Publishers Weekly

What is it about lighthouses that stirs the heart and sparks the imagination? Built for strength and permanence, they are nonetheless always vulnerable. We look to them for guidance and reassurance yet never quite lose the feeling of being watched when near them. Their keepers work tirelessly to serve humanity, protecting many hundreds of lives each year; yet they themselves are isolated from other people. And of course, we are ever aware that these often remote outposts can be unforgiving of human frailties, so inevitably they become the setting for tragedy—and consequently—for spirits that linger at the site of their ruined hopes, their sufferings, and their obsessions. In Lighthouse Hauntings a dozen contemporary authors spin an intriguing mix of supernatural tales around this evocative theme. Some of these never before published stories are just plain creepy, others are mystifying or metaphysical; even heartwarming, but all are vividly memorable.

Nestled on a mountainous plateau overlooking Deadwood’s downtown core district is one of the premier historic cemeteries in Black Hills: Mount Moriah Cemetery. Established in 1878, this cemetery contains some of North America’s most recognized Western legends, including James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok, Martha “Calamity Jane” Canary, Seth Bullock, John “Potato Creek Johnny” Perrett, and Henry Weston “Preacher” Smith. They represent a small portion of the more than 3,600 people buried in Mount Moriah whose memories have been carved, chiseled, and etched into the monuments within this cemetery. Deadwood’s Mount Moriah Cemetery is a combination of historic and contemporary photographs chronicling the history of the cemetery and the stories of the individuals—both colorful and illustrious—who helped carve Deadwood into the annals of the American West.

The title story, The Mystery of Jacob Engles, was inspired by a real family mystery. Family history information abruptly ended with the author’s paternal grandfather, George Ewing Ogle. But there seemed to be an understanding that the real great-grandfather was likely to be a man by the name of Jacob Engles, who went off to the Civil War in 1864 and was gone for decades. Lacking real answers, the author weaves a moving tale, accounting for the missing years, explaining how the family became Ogles, and telling how Jacob Engles ended back in the hometown to find his family. The other ten short stories in this collection were written over the period of sixteen years, and most were also inspired by real people.
