Some people just can't catch a break. Born and raised in a chicken coop, brain-damaged by scarlet fever, and blamed for the death of his baby brother, Ed Lantzer became what everyone expected him to be: unworthy of love and unable to give it. Knowing no other way, he made sure he lived up to this label by concealing his feelings for his wife and children, eventually abandoning them and setting off in search of his purpose--a purpose he was sure existed, even though he had no idea what it was. He couldn't write and his only skills involved working with wood, but he had a gift. When he put two pieces of wood together, something magical happened, and people noticed. But Ed continued to sabotage himself and lost everything, until one day his purpose was revealed. This enormous task involved complicated mathematical formulas, esoteric knowledge, and an ability to see in ways inaccessible to normal human beings. And it required that he live the rest of his life in seclusion, deprivation, and complete faith. The result was a masterpiece so exceptional, so profound, that it stands alone in the world. Ed's amazing journey will inspire some to renew their faith. It will move others to understand the power of love. Ultimately, this is a story that pulls those hidden emotions and secrets from deep down inside our hearts and brings them to the surface. It tells us we're not alone and that we are loved more than we could possibly have dreamed. We are all born into this world with a purpose. We just need to be quiet and listen for it. Can you hear yours?

Here, his close friends John Berger and Rema Hammami present a beautiful new translation of two of Darwish’s later works. This collection of unique works by 150 Los Angeles graffiti and tattoo artists represents an unprecedented collaboration across the city’s diverse artistic landscape. Many graffiti artists carry sketchbooks, called black books, and they ask crew members and others whose work they admire to inscribe their books with lettering or drawings. A few years ago, the Getty Research Institute invited artists, including Angst, Axis, Big Sleeps, Chaz, Cre8, Defer, EyeOne, Fishe, Heaven, Hyde, Look, ManOne, and Prime, to consider the idea of a citywide graffiti black book. During visits to the Getty Center, the artists viewed rare books related to calligraphy and letterforms, including works by Albrecht Dürer and Leonardo da Vinci. The artists instantly recognized the connections to their own practices and were particularly drawn to a liber amicorum (book of friends), a form of autograph book popular in the seventeenth century. Passed from hand to hand, it was filled with signatures, poetry, and coats of arms, like a black book from another era. Inspired by this meeting of minds across centuries, these artists became both creators and curators, crafting their own pages and inviting others to contribute. Eventually 150 Los Angeles artists decorated 143 individual pages. These were bound together into an exquisite artists’ book that became known as the Getty Graffiti Black Book. This publication reproduces each page from the original artists’ book and recounts the story of an unprecedented collaboration across the diverse artistic landscape of Los Angeles.

“Verde’s unique style and simple yet increasingly important messages of peace, mindfulness, and community make her stories a must-share...A must-purchase.” —School Library Journal (starred review) “Walls do not just create barriers and divide spaces. They can be canvases for artmaking; opportunities to shape a community.” —The Horn Book “This story of urban renewal sends a welcome double message by Verde: neighbors and neighborhoods are more than the way they look, and ordinary people can band together to transform big things.” —Publishers Weekly A boy takes on a community art project in order to make his neighborhood more beautiful in this empowering and inspiring picture book by Susan Verde, stunningly illustrated by award-winning artist John Parra. One creative boy. One bare, abandoned wall. One BIG idea. There is a wall in Ángel’s neighborhood. Around it, the community bustles with life: music, dancing, laughing. Not the wall. It is bleak. One boy decides to change that. But he can’t do it alone. Told in elegant verse by Susan Verde and vibrantly illustrated by John Parra, this inspiring picture book celebrates the power of art to tell a story and bring a community together.

Hidden in the desolate woods on the Central California coast, lost to time and memory, is a WPA mural unlike any other created during the 1930s. This one was not simply fashioned from charcoal and paint; it was crafted out of undying evil--the evil of an ancient demonic army called Legion. When structural inspector Jack Hayden stumbles upon the mural in a ruined civic building, he tries to convince himself that it might add to the crumbling structure’s value. But that note of hopefulness is quickly replaced by terror as the mural spreads its cruel, nightmarish horror over Hayden and everyone in his life. Soon he's leading his own attack force made up of those who have managed to fend off the evil of the mural in their souls, but now must do so in physical terms...or die trying. The fictional debut of a new master of horror fiction!
