This book weaves a web with strands that connect a favorite saint, an American revolution in stained glass design, a west-coast cultural renaissance, and a now obscure Swedish scientist and theologian. With beautiful photographs and prose, it brings to life the art and science of art conservation as dedicated people of various talents and interests struggle to preserve a cherished part of America's cultural heritage. --------------- Just as Porter cut glass and shaped lead when he first created his legendary stained glass, Douglas Stinson and Ariana Makau have fashioned and formed an artistic story of its restoration more than a century later. Revealing the modern techniques of restitution craftsmanship against the backdrop of significant San Francisco history, this book is its own work of art." James Lawrence, Assistant Professor of Spirituality, Graduate Theological Union and Dean of the Swedenborgian House of Studies.

Over the concluding decades of the twentieth century, the historic preservation community increasingly turned its attention to modern buildings, including bungalows from the 1930s, gas stations and diners from the 1940s, and office buildings and architectural homes from the 1950s. Conservation efforts, however, were often hampered by a lack of technical information about the products used in these structures, and to fill this gap Twentieth-Century Building Materials was developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service and first published in 1995. Now, this invaluable guide is being reissued—with a new preface by the book’s original editor. With more than 250 illustrations, including a full-color photographic essay, the volume remains an indispensable reference on the history and conservation of modern building materials. Thirty-seven essays written by leading experts offer insights into the history, manufacturing processes, and uses of a wide range of materials, including glass block, aluminum, plywood, linoleum, and gypsum board. Readers will also learn about how these materials perform over time and discover valuable conservation and repair techniques. Bibliographies and sources for further research complete the volume. The book is intended for a wide range of conservation professionals including architects, engineers, conservators, and material scientists engaged in the conservation of modern buildings, as well as scholars in related disciplines.

This detailed book is a “how-to” guide to building controlled vocabulary tools, cataloging and indexing cultural materials with terms and names from controlled vocabularies, and using vocabularies in search engines and databases to enhance discovery and retrieval online. Also covered are the following: What are controlled vocabularies and why are they useful? Which vocabularies exist for cataloging art and cultural objects? How should they be integrated in a cataloging system? How should they be used for indexing and for retrieval? How should an institution construct a local authority file? The links in a controlled vocabulary ensure that relationships are defined and maintained for both cataloging and retrieval, clarifying whether a rose window and a Catherine wheel are the same thing, or how pot-metal glass is related to the more general term stained glass. The book provides organizations and individuals with a practical tool for creating and implementing vocabularies as reference tools, sources of documentation, and powerful enhancements for online searching.

I begin my paintings with a sketch and application of colorful/bright pigment and water to the paper. I disrupt the blends with salt or water, watching as one color blossoms in water, as another color starts to travel across the paper. I utilize India Ink to demarcate changes, also adding add swirls other artifacts, in the aim to achieve whimsy. My coloring books are my paintings! I run the paintings through filters and drop the color from them, leaving the lines so that you can add your own color. But wait, there's more... I've added an Augmented Reality component to this. Wonder what colors I used for that piece in the corner there? Take out your phone, download the Zappar app from your app store and "zap" the code. What happens? At the very least an image of the original painting will pop up and you can see what it looks like, side by side with the coloring page. Beyond that, you'll meet Mist, my liaison to the AR world. She will be a recurring character in all my AR work. Stay tuned and enjoy.
