Excerpt from The Moral Dignity of Baptism The views herein set forth are not original, but such as our people have always advocated. It is remarkable 'how these views are gradually working their way among other denominations, and are even maintained and get fresh emphasis by others than Baptists in their latest and best expositions of the Scriptures. It has been my aim, Without the use of quotation or footnote, except in a few cases, to make straightforward state ment of the latest results of the best scholarship. The trained interpreter and the ordinary reader of the Word of God are at one as to the form of baptism, and almost at one as to the meaning of the ordinance. The common ground of their meeting is Where Baptists have always stood. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Baptism; An Argument and a Reply The first edition of this little work was issued in 1880. Owing chiefly to an over pretentious title for which I was in no way responsible, the balance of the edition left unsold on my return from a years absence from Canada, was destroyed. A second edition was published in 1882, in reply to Mr. McKay's review of my first pamphlet. This edition has been exhausted. The present pamphlet contains the substance of the preceding one, with some points more fully elaborated and new ones added. Great care has been taken to verify every quotation and to guard every statement. As I seek both to reply to Mr. McKay and carry forward an argument for the Baptist view of the mode and subjects of baptism, the treatment is not as compact as could be wished. Special attention is called to the foot notes and addenda, as they deal with many of the charges and statements of the pamphlet to which mine is an answer. Where it is possible, the reader of this pamphlet should also read those to which I reply, so that he may consider both sides fairly. I can only add a hope that these pages may not be made the occasion for bitterness of feeling by any, but may be of service to the truth, and express a wish for the time to come when candid discussion of disputed points may cause no abatement of the warmth of that Christian fellowship which should exist between all who are followers of the same Lord. Excerpt from The Nature and Design of Christian Baptism Trusting that I shall do this with all Christian forbearance, and gentleness of spirit, becoming one who professes the name of Chiist, yet faithfully and openly dealing with the arguments of those who would shut us out from the gospel and the truth, because we do not see it, as advocated in their Magazines; and I sincerely hope that the following pages may' be the instrument in the hands of God, of leading many to a serious and thoughtful reflection, concerning the nature and design or christian baptism: then we shall ascribe all praise, glory, and dominion, to Him who is over all, God, blessed for ever.
