One of the many examples is the way the author mocks gender roles and plays with certain stereotypes that are often criticized in the genre. Set in the framework of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, where witches have beards and women want to be ‘unsexed’, the witches in Wyrd Sisters show astonishingly few traits of character and behavior that would be seen as typically female or expectable in a witch. This essay will examine Wyrd Sisters and Macbeth from today’s angle, where gender and genderfluidity are a hotly discussed topic. By looking at the representation of manliness and womanhood, as well as the three witches as an old and a modern version of the Triple Goddess, I will show how William Shakespeare and Terry Pratchett treat the topic of gender and how genderfluidity is represented in their works. This will lead me to the conclusion on the question, in how far the representation of gender, genderfluidity and in line with it that of the triple goddess has evolved over the 300 years that lay in between the publication of the two works.

As far as the gender issues in Hamlet are concerned, the following question arises: which feminist’s approach should be applied to analyse Hamlet’s character and to demonstrate in how far the historical background influences the gender constellations in "Hamlet"? Therefore, it is important to give a historical background of social structures and social roles during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. Elizabethans lived in a time, in which patriarchy was part of their lives. Women were obligated to follow the rules of men. First, it is inevitable to label the categories ‘masculinity’ and ‘femininity’ in connection with cruelty and domination. However, it is difficult to define what is associated with ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ characteristics and to position these categories in a patriarchal system without developing clichés. To which extent, for instance is Hamlet allowed to grieve deeply for his father and why does Hamlet act misogynously towards women he loves? Obviously, along with the gender distinctions go different functional roles thus, examining the representation of gender roles in Hamlet in connection with social roles will play a dominant role in this paper. This term paper will first address the early modern society to outline the hierarchical system in the Elizabethan World View. After a brief presentation of the Elizabethan World View, patriarchal structures in the early modern England will be illustrated since the cultural context describes the beliefs of Shakespeare’s time and provides the basis for the analysis of gender roles in "Hamlet".

In Aeschylus's Agamemnon and Shakespeare's Macbeth, values of gender and sexuality are implicated in the signifying processes of the stage. In particular, both plays suggest an inherent link between a certain kind of "performative" language (words that materialize) and the gender undecidability of the speaker. As Clytemnestra persuades Agamemnon and speaks incantatory words, her language seems able to produce (rather than merely describe) effects. The play suggests that this power to kill things with words lies precisely in the gender undecidability of Clytemenstra (whom the Watchman describes as both "woman" and "man"). The chorus appropriate to the male that which is manifest, the "acting" of violent intentions, while to the female they assign expectation, visionary experience, that which may be unfulfilled or "come to nothing." The androgynous Clytemnestra's language crosses this boundary between the visionary and the manifest; her expectations are enacted and they become real. Macbeth similarly links the androgyny of the Weird Sisters and Lady Macbeth to their capacity to speak determinative language. The "bearded" witches' prophesies come true, while the language of the "unsexed" Lady Macbeth materializes, though in uncanny ways she seems not to have anticipated. As both plays trace this dynamic of the curse (or determinative language), they dramatize also the related visionary language that occurs in the "intermission," a moment of arrest between the murderous purpose and its effect. Such visionary language is anticipatory; it refers to action and images that are still undecided, ambiguous, fluctuating. Characters such as Lady Macbeth disparagingly link this visionary language to the female, recognizing its capacity to interfere with the accomplishment of a murderous purpose. But perhaps what speaks in such an "intermission," as language halts and reviews the injuries of the past, is tragedy itself.
