Excerpt from The Modern Asphalt Pavement The Subsoil Base - As the foundation of a pavement, of any kind, is placed upon the soil and supported by the latter, it is a matter of vital importance that this latter support should be adequate, and it will only prove adequate if the subsoil is not subject to displacement from settlement or frost and is thoroughly drained. With sandy soils which are well compacted and which, from their nature, are well drained and dry there is no difficulty in the preparation of a satisfactory subgrade. Trenches in such soils, if they occur, can be solidly refilled with the aid of water. If the subgrade is a true sand, as in the neighborhood of seabeaches, it may be necessary, in order to compact the surface, to spread a course of gravel between the sand and the base in order to be able to roll it properly. Asphalt Pavements provides the know-how behind the design, production and maintenance of asphalt pavements and parking lots. Incorporating the latest technology, this book is the first to focus primarily on the design, production and maintenance of low-volume roads and parking areas. Special attention is given to determining the traffic capacity, required thickness and asphalt mixture type for parking applications. Topics covered include: material information such as binder properties, testing grading and selection; construction information such as mixing plant operation, proportioning, mixture placement and compaction; and design information such as thickness and mixture design methods and guidelines on applying these to highways, city streets and parking Areas. It is an essential practical guide aimed at those engineers and architects who are not directly involved in the asphalt industry, but who nonetheless need to have a good general knowledge of the subject. Asphalt Pavements provides a novice with enough information to completely design, construct and specify an asphalt pavement.

Asphalt Renaissance is a brilliant account of the rebirth and re-imagining of the art of street painting by top artist Kurt Wenner. He revolutionized this tradition by creating a technique for drawing on pavement in 3-D. This system enables him to craft astounding images that reach out of the ground toward the viewer and appear perilously deep. Wenner has traveled the world over and his incredible art is both a global and an Internet phenomenon.
