The golden specter of El Dorado and its promises of unlimited wealth have haunted Western iconography for centuries. The Miraculous Lie: Lope de Aguirre and the Search for El Dorado in the Latin American Historical Novel is a fascinating study of five twentieth-century Latin American novels that focus on one particular search for El Dorado: the infamous 1559 expedition, headed by Pedro Ursua and the first legendary colonial rebel against the crown, Lope de Aguirre. Author Bart Lewis approaches five works--Arturo Uslar Pietri's El Camino de El Dorado, Abel Posses's Daim-n, Miguel Otero Silva's Lope de Aquirre, Pr'ncipe de la Libertad, Jorge Ernesto Funes's Una Lanza por Lope de Aguirre, and FZlix _lvarez SOenz's Cr-nica de Blasfemos--as representations of Latin American literature during the mid to late twentieth-century and as re-examinations of the notorious figure of Lope de Aguirre. Lewis is therefore able to provide not only a successful chronology of the stylistic development of the Latin American novel, but also a thoughtful analysis of how these novels appropriate Aguirre and give a revisionist and authentic voice to the Latin American cultural founder. Wonderfully engaging and beautifully written, The Miraculous Lie examines the search for El Dorado in modern Latin American literature as the search for self-determination.

My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me: 1. I’m in a coma. 2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore. 3. Sometimes I lie. Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

For Paul Ferrini, there was a time when the very thought of Jesus left him cold. Instead of embodying the truth of Jesus' teaching, Christianity seemed to harbor the fearful thoughts and actions of people who were more committed to self-interest than to unconditional love. So when Ferrini felt Jesus' voice inside him saying, "I want you to acknowledge me," he resisted. In time, however, he came to realize that it was not Jesus he was rejecting but the untruths that had become attached to Christian teaching. Responding to the inner voice did not mean merely acknowledging Jesus as some great teacher who lived in the past, but also meant that he was opening himself up to a living presence within his own awareness. Once Ferrini reached this reconciliation, powerful words of spiritual truth began to flow through him. Reflections of the Christ Mind presents the most important teachings the author has received through his spiritual awakening. Here at last is a gospel devoted solely to Jesus' teachings of love, healing, and forgiveness. The teacher readers meet in these pages is both compassionate and open-minded-he is the Jesus Christians know in their hearts. Repudiating religious hypocrisy, intolerance, and spiritual pride, Ferrini rejects the dogmatic position of the Church, offering instead words of hope and healing that form the new gospel for today.

I was born into a Royal family in Ibadan, Nigeria, but the Lord opened my spiritual eyes of understanding by accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior at a tender age of 19 years. I attended the Elementary Methodist Primary School, Akeetan, Oyo, Nigeria from 1961 till 1966 and Oranyan Grammar School, Oyo, from 1967 till 1971 and graduated with many distinctions and gained several awards. I gained an admission to the famous and prestigious Medical School, University of Ibadan in 1974 and graduated in 1980. I had my internship at the Baptist Hospital, Ogbomoso, Nigeria. I joined the University College Hospital, Ibadan, for my residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I was at the University College Hospital, Ibadan for residency training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from September of 1983 till August of 1985. I left for the United Kingdom and trained in various centers under the Universities of Manchester, Sheffield and London. While I was in England for my residency training, I sat and passed the membership examination of the Royal College Examination with distinction and had a gold medal viva at first attempt which was an uncommon feat in those days. I was employed as the Consultant and Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Burin Peninsular Health Center in 1993 before I left the hospital for the Royal University Hospital, University of Saskatchewan from 1994 to 1996 for the Canadian Fellowship Training as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist. I was later employed in Regina, University of Saskatchewan, Canada after I had completed my residency training and I have been practising there up till today. I pray for all my patients prior to any surgical procedure in Canada.
