The ship was to be seven miles long, a third of a mile in diameter and have a wing-spread of three and a half miles. It would take two and a half centuries to construct. Its announced purpose: to carry humanity away from its ruined world, from the world that had become a perpetual purgatory. To build this vast ship would require the undivided activity of an entire nation and would mean carrying out a ruthless program of war and conquest, of annihilation and reconstruction, and of education and rediscovery. But was this starship really what it was claimed to be? Or was there a greater secret behind its incredible cost - a secret so strange that no man dared reveal it?

Now in Paperback The Road to Science Fiction is a six-volume anthology that covers the development of this genre from its earliest prototypes to the current day. Created originally to provide anthologies for use in classrooms in the late 1970s, these volumes became mass-market sellers. Between an ancient Roman's trip to the moon and the fantastic tales of H.G. Wells lies a journey through time and space and an awesome evolution in scientific thinking. From Gilgamesh's search for immortality to Edgar Allan Poe's balloon trip in the year 2848 these and other key works are gathered together for the first time in one anthology, complete with revealing commentary on the authors, their eras, and the role each played in establishing what we today recognize as science fiction. Volume 4 From Here to Forever covers the period from 1950-1992, illustrating how science fiction can be as concerned with language and character as much as traditional fiction and anything in the mainstream. Includes stories by Jorge Luis Borges, Richard Matheson, C. M. Kornbluth, Jack Vance, and Pamela Zoline.

An interstellar agent discovers his latent powers while investigating a warlike planet in this classic sci-fi fantasy by the author of Dune. It’s been centuries since the devastating Rim Wars separated numerous planets from the protection and control of the galactic empire. The Rediscovery and Reeducation Service is dedicated to finding these “lost planets” and returning them to the fold. But not all civilizations are eager to cooperate. Young and charismatic, Lewis Orne is one of the best R&R agents in the organization’s history. But when he identifies troubling signs on the planet of Hamal, he is transferred to Investigative Adjustment, the agency that specializes in dealing with violent worlds. Suddenly, Orne is shuttling to the edge of the galaxy to detect any signs of latent aggression among Hamal’s population. Shortly after making landfall, Orne makes a far more astonishing discovery: he suddenly finds himself in possession of profound extrasensory powers. When these powers become known, he is invited to join Hamal’s company of “gods.” It is an offer too enticing to refuse. Yet being a god comes with certain expectations . . .

The Interplanetary Laser Jousting Tournament Or Relativity Revised By: John Barry It is said that two spaceships going away from each other at very high speeds are able to see light from the other travelling at the proper speed of light because space contracts and time slows down. What would happen if these two spacecrafts passed each other? Would space suddenly invert and time change speed? How would a spaceship travelling between two light sources, such as stars, see light from both going the right speed at the same time? If, on the other hand, light travels at a broad range of speeds and we can detect only that which is going the right speed for us, then where is all the other light hiding? An electron in a cyclotron that is accelerated toward a target at close to the speed of light gains mass. If the target were racing away at a near equal speed, would that extra mass turn out to not be there? This book suggests an alternate theory to special relativity and a few experiments to prove it – or help us to learn something new.
