Excerpt from The Methodist Episcopal Church and the Civil War The study deals with facts alone, and I have tried to be absolutely fair to all parties. Most of the material which I have had to use is of controversial character, and it was not always easy to come to a conclusion as to the exact facts, and it is not at all to be wondered at if I have made mistakes in some of my conclusions; but while I admit possible mistakes, I can still lay claim to a clear conscience, as far as fairness is con cerned. In many places the account is not as readable as I should have liked to have made it, and where such is the case I have no excuse to offer except that in my desire to be fair I have crowded down all feeling and any attempt at a glorification of the Church, the absence of which has perhaps made the narrative seem more prosaic. Excerpt from Virginia After the War: An Account of Three Years' Experience in Reorganizing the Methodist Episcopal Church in Virginia at the Close of the Civil War The following narrative was written at the repeated request of friends. The events detailed occurred more than twenty years ago, and, as I kept no notes at the time, I have been obliged to write from memory. As some of the persons referred to are still living, I have thought it best to use fictitious initials. I was born in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1812. My father, John G. Conser - for many years a magistrate and an honored man in the community - was the only son of Henry Conser, one of the founders of Lewisburg. Henry Conser, my grandfather, was of Greek descent. But he and my father both died long before I could remember, and all I could learn of our Greek ancestor was that he lived somewhere along the Grecian archipelago, that he was captured by the English in a fight on the Mediterranean sea, and was taken to England, whence he migrated to this country early in the eighteenth century. I was educated at Dickinson College, Carlisle, where I graduated in 1839. In 1840 I entered the Baltimore Conference, filling, during my itinerancy, appointments in Baltimore; also, a number of appointments in Pennsylvania and in Virginia. The first two years of the Rebellion I served as chaplain of the Fifth Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. Afterwards I filled appointments at Duncannon and Gettysburg, then went to Virginia, where occurred the events recorded in the following pages. Excerpt from The Antislavery Struggle and Triumph in the Methodist Episcopal Church The subject of slavery has ceased to be an excit ing question. A general agreement has succeeded the former dissensions attendant upon its discussion, only a few years ago, in both civil and ecclesiastical bodies. And this is so, because in America slavery has ceased to be a fact. It is now only a memory, kept painfully vivid with its victims by the spirit of caste which remains in both Church and State. Excerpt from The Methodist Episcopal Church in the South Is the Methodist Episcopal Church, by its efforts to establish and extend itself in the States which were once known as Slave States, violating any right of any other Church; and this, of course, means any right of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South? In trying to answer this question, I have in mind, at the present moment, not so much what may have been said at any time by ministers of our own Church in the North, as what ministers and members of our Church, in the prosecution of their work in the South, are not unfrequently compelled to hear from ministers and members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in regard to our presence in their midst. It is affirmed by them that we are out of our place in being in the South; that, agreeably to the Plan of Separation adopted by the General Conference of 1844, the South was set apart as the field of operation for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, while the Methodist Episcopal Church was expected to limit its labors to the North.
