Excerpt from The Methodist Episcopal Church and the Civil War The study deals with facts alone, and I have tried to be absolutely fair to all parties. Most of the material which I have had to use is of controversial character, and it was not always easy to come to a conclusion as to the exact facts, and it is not at all to be wondered at if I have made mistakes in some of my conclusions; but while I admit possible mistakes, I can still lay claim to a clear conscience, as far as fairness is con cerned. In many places the account is not as readable as I should have liked to have made it, and where such is the case I have no excuse to offer except that in my desire to be fair I have crowded down all feeling and any attempt at a glorification of the Church, the absence of which has perhaps made the narrative seem more prosaic. This book is a detailed history of the secession of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the southern United States in 1845. The split was the result of a disagreement over the issue of slavery and had far-reaching effects on both the Methodist Church and American society as a whole. The book is a valuable reference for anyone interested in the history of religion or the Civil War era.
