Excerpt from The Messenger, Vol. 6: April, 1910 Just as the clock struck half-past seven Charles walked up on the piazza and called for Miss Myrtle Davis. She was ready, and they started immediately. When he left her he said, I'll be back at ten. At eight, he rang the bell of Dr. Moore's residence and asked for Miss Ada. He was ushered into the parlor as usual, and there was met by Ada. They talked, and as the conversation drifted on, Ada left the room to get a picture. While she was gone, Charles turned the clock up fifteen minutes. When ten O'clock came he arose to go as usual, and promised he would not be so late next time. He arrived at the Academy at ten, and was waiting when Myrtle appeared, ready to leave. As they wended their way homeward in the soft moonlight, Myrtle remarked in a tone Of commendation, with a little touch Of tenderness, Charles, you certainly are prompt and true in all you say. Excerpt from The Messenger, Vol. 3: Christmas, A. D. 1916 We' shall soon find him again whom we have lost; we come a long step nearer to him every day. It is only the imagination and the senses that miss their object; he whom we can no longer see is closer to to us than be; fore; we meet him continually in one common center - God. As for me, who was deprived of seeing him for so many years, I talk to him; I open my heart to him; I seem to find him in God, and although I wept bitterly at the news of his death, I cannot feel that I have lost him. - Fenelon. Excerpt from The Messenger, Vol. 3: June, 1907 In the days of ancient Greece we see the natives travelling weary miles in order to consult the far-famed oracle of Delphi; the Romans trusted with implicit faith their precious Sibylline books; Saul consulted the Witch of Endor for information; and today our poetess may listen to the inspiring voices of the muses, and enrapture her listeners with songs of poetic frenzy. Our prophetess may draw aside the curtain which separates the present from the future and revel in the stories woven from the wanderings of her imagination. But I, as historian, am denied the use of imagination, and the inspiration of the muses, for history deals with the deeds committed in the flesh. I, as the scapegoat of the ancient Hebrews, 'have all the sins of the people to bear, and these are they who have come up through tribulation and donned garments of white. In most great eras there is some one condition which strikes the key-note to the age. In the beginning it would be best to give you our chief claim to fame, and I have good authority for the statement, which lies in the fact that We have been heard for our much speaking, and for this reason the very dignified and dutiful members of our class, Mary Lucy Harrell, Alma Cole, Jessie Rigsbee, Lottie Burroughs, Mabel Bruce, Leonard Dunlop and Myrtle Leigh will be immortalized by the teachers.
