It chronicles the life of impoverished Redmond Barry, an Irishman who wants to be an English aristocrat. Continuing to play with his luck, he gains wealth in the beginning but eventually is punished for his many lovable imperfections.

Excerpt from The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq. Barry lyndon was written in 1843 and 1844, and first appeared in Fraser' 8 Magazine in the latter year. As was the case with nearly all of Thackeray's serially published novels, the end was not written until almost the time when the serial publication required it Thack cray's diary recording on November 4, 1844, finished Barry after great throes late at night. He had writ ten at it all through the year in Paris and in London, and apparently with unusual difficulty in the midst of other undertakings; Mrs. Ritchie quotes several passages from the diary and from letters, ranging from October, 1843, to August, 1844, showing work for Punch and many things in hand besides, and nearly all expressing anxiety at the slow and laborious progress of the novel. Finally he carried it with him on his journey from Cornhill to Cairo, and wrote the last lines, and the diary entry just cited, in quarantine at Malta on his way home. Excerpt from The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq. And the Miscellaneous Papers Written Between 1843 and 1847 There is, moreover, another point in which the auto biographical Scheme, not necessarily Of course, but as a matter of fact and by likelihood beforehand, has ham pered and clogged the narrative and exposition. We get too many things recounted and too few acted, with the efiect Of something like the re'cits in conventional French tragedy. Barry's experiences with Dr. Johnson, for instance, would have made a famous scene of the same kind as those actually furnished by the Doctor in The Virginians, where the scheme is also in a way autobio graphical, but more loosely managed and less concentrated on the display of a single character.
