Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, Vol. 10: A Journal of Medical Science, Literature, Criticism and News; January 6 to June 30, 1855 It follows, that if the Practitioner wishes to give his patient this remedy, he must take the trouble of aiding him to obtain it of a genuine quality; it will not do to write a prescription, and leave the bearer of it to find a person who will obey it honestly. Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, Vol. 1: A Journal of Medical Science, Literature, Criticism, and News; For 1869 Van! Recently we called attention to the defective condition of the examining art among us, as evidenced by some late exami nations for Medical degrees. Since then, we have been dipping somewhat deeply into what we may perhaps be permitted to call the literature of examinations - a literature which has been opened up for us by the labours of the visitors appointed by the Medical Council to report on the examinations of the diffe rent licensing bodies in the United Kingdom. These reports occupy the greater part of two large volumes, and although they can scarcely be looked upon as light reading, their perusal is certainly instructive. Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, 1866, Vol. 2: A Journal of Medical Science, Literature, Criticism, and News On June 16 Sir William Fergusson removed the portion of the bougie by the operation for lateral lithotomy it had become broken into three pieces, one fracture probably having been made during the operation. Its surface was in no way coated with any calcareous matter, a point to which Sir Wm. Ferguson called attention, as it would be thus the more rea y passed over in sounding, the characteristic ring of the staff upon it being absent. Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, Vol. 2: A Journal of Medical Science, Literature, Criticism, and News; For 1865 Of his publications, most are anonymous and published in the Quarterly, and we have not time to attempt an account of them but there are three which are well worth noting here, as showing his mental character most completely. One is his well-known Essay on Puerperal Fever, to which is added his introductory lecture at the opening of the session at King's College in 1836. No one who sees the most minute care with which every fact is adduced, the vast number of Opinions and authorities collated, the almost cramped and constrained style, as if from a nervous anxiety to state the arguments fairly, could think Ferguson the idle, haphazard, mere fashionable Doctor which, as he said, some of his con temporaries were pleased to call him, till this book showed him in his true light. It marked the era when blood poison ing, and other phrases of the humoral pathology were once more accepted by us, in place of the action of blood-vessel theory. Excerpt from The Medical Times and Gazette, Vol. 2 In consequence of this faith in facts he overlooks none; he passes by none. Now, a common error is to think some facts more important than others but all are important, and if one is left out, a whole heap may fall asunder. Now, Harvey omits nothing; he commences with the most obvious, and pro weds step by step; nothing is blurred; nothing is left 111 defined. His work was composed before the Novum Organon was published, but it has been well said by Willis that it might have been planned on the model of that system.
