Excerpt from The Medical Register for New England In compiling the Directory of Physicians the author has felt it to be the safest course to confine himself strictly to the lists of the state medical societies. A wider latitude in this direction might perhaps have been decided on, and the names of many reputable practitioners, vouched for as such by their fellows, have been included. To carry out such a plan, however, would have been a very difiicult task. The names of many worthy men would have escaped notice, some questionable names might have been included, and the distinction between worthy and unworthy would, in many cases, have seemed invidious. The lists of the soci eties, except that of Vermont, are such as are authorized by the secretaries of such organizations; in that State the eu thor is indebted to a friend for the most accurate catalogue which can be obtained.
