Excerpt from The Medical Clinics of North America, Vol. 6: November, 1922 The published record extended to June, 1917. The weight was then kg. (100 pounds). The diet had never averaged higher than 70 gm. Protein, 10 gm. Carbohydrate, and 1500 calories. During his entire time at home the patient had carried on his regular business with only six days' total absence on account of colds. This same condition continues today. Glycosuria and aci dosis remain continuously absent. Slight hyperglycemia has been the rule rather than the exception, but it is permissible in a case of this type because the age involves less tendency to progressiveness than in younger persons and children. Inherent non-progressiveness of the condition cannot be assumed as an explanation of the good result or an excuse for the high mortality among adults with Similar or milder cases on excessive diets in this series. We have here a decisive contrast between two periods: first, eight years with active symptoms and extreme downward progress; second, eight years on reduced diet with out symptoms and without downward progress. The case is still severe and the tolerance low. It is known that diabetes is hardest to control in the severe stage. What has been aecom plished for this patient can be accomplished for all patients Of this type, granted fidelity to diet and the absence Of any unusual complications. With milder cases the results are correspondingly easier and better. For typical patients of this age or Older the question of spontaneous downward progress is definitely decided in the negative. The second case was No. 66 in the Rockefeller Institute series. This girl was received for treatment in March, 1916. Dr. Felice has put together clinical reviews articles that cover a broad scope of clinical issues that are common among sexually active adolescent patients. Some issues addressed include: HPV Vaccine Update; Treating Dysmenorrhea/Menorrhagia; New STD Guidelines; Emergency Contraception; Talking to Parents about Teen Sexuality; and Long-acting Reversible Contraception. Most pediatricians feel poorly equipped to address these problems. They are also complicated issues that give the average pediatric clinician pause and often take more time than usually scheduled in a busy practice. By providing practical updated information on these clinical problems, pediatric practitioners can become more comfortable in dealing with these topics. Although many clinicians are not involved with adolescents in the juvenile justice system, Dr. Felice included an article on this so that pediatricians can be more educated and sensitive to the needs of these young people. An article on human trafficking of teens in included with the hope bringing awareness of this issue. Articles in this issue were selected specifically because they directly affect primary pediatric care. For example, an article is included on how to help young people avoid being victims of partner violence rather than an article on sexual abuse and rape because adolescents would be treated in the emergency room and not the pediatrician’s office.

Excerpt from The Medical Clinics of North America, Vol. 6 It might be well at this place to reiterate our definition Of an endocrine disorder as an endocrinous syndrome from which general or systemic disease or lesion has been excluded. As an illustration, these patients have undergone a complete diagnostic survey in order to determine whether a lesion or disease of any other system could be the primary cause for the endocrine com plex; and if such a condition was demonstrable in the presence of a ductless gland disorder, the endocrine syndrome was always classified as a condition secondary to the other primary disease, and the case was not grouped with those having only primary disorders of the internal secretions.
