Excerpt from The Mechanics' Magazine, Museum, Register, Journal, and Gazette, Vol. 36: January 1st. June 25th, 1842 We do not wish to institute any invidious comparisons but somethingis due to justice, and there are a few statistical facts con nected with this subject which might form the ground of a curious enquiry. In the first place, the Great Western proprietary might reasonably have expected, without the slightest approach to anything like presump tion, that our own government would feel some interest in the success of an under taking which appeared to have attracted the sympathies of the whole civilised world. When it was understood that the Great Western had finally departed for America the press of Europe was occupied with the sub jcct, and as the time approached for her return, nations stood on tip-toe awaiting the event. We need not dwell on the enthusiasm which seemed to pervade society at large on her successful return: it was like a national congratulation, - the winning of another bat tle of Waterloo, without its horrors. Again and again the experiment was repeated. And always with the same success; and when in the wide world she had not a competitor, and the Government saw the expediency of dis patching our North American mails by steam, what was more to be expected than that it would rejoice to throw in its powerful aid in support of an undertaking which had already earned golden Opinions from all sorts of people ou the contrary, however, not only the Great Western Company obtained an pre ference, but they were not even allowed to carry the mails at less than any other Com pany coohi undertake them; and instead of receiving encouragement from the Govern ment, in premium of a year was ah solutely given for the building of vessels to Oppose them, and as this, it appears, was not enough, a sop of a year has since been added to keep up the spirit of the thing. Excerpt from The Mechanics' Magazine, Museum, Register, Journal, and Gazette, Vol. 18: October 6, 1832-March 31, 1833 Full justice is commonly supposed to be done to that cheapness which forms so remarkable a feature of the literature of the present times, when it is allowed to have facilitated amazingly the diffusion of knowledge among all classes of the people. This, however, is to take but a limited view of the good with which it has been attended; for in proportion as the prices of books have been lowered, so also has the public learnt to appreciate the contents of books more according to their real worth. The time is not long gone past, when cheapness in a literary production was generally looked upon as a sure proof of want of respecta bility, if not of merit. Large paper, large type, large margins, and large prices, were things almost as essential to a good literary reputation as genius and learning themselves.
