Excerpt from The McMaster University Monthly, Vol. 8: Oct;, 1898, to May, 1899 These were a few of the events which came to break the monotony of our second year. But what of that monotony itself We are accustomed to look carefully for the outstand ing events and overlook the details. As a rule, at the end of a day, a person cannot point to a single markedly important thing which he has learned during its hours, and yet it is the days which make years, and it is the acts and thoughts of days which make up character and life. Excerpt from The McMaster University Monthly, Vol. 18: October, 1908 to May, 1909 Captain Mercadier - thirty-six years in the service, twenty-two campaigns, three wounds - had then just obtained his pension, which amounted to not quite four hundred dollars a year; this, added to the fifty dollars to which the Cross yearly entitled him, placed the Captain in that state of honorable poverty reserved for the old defenders of the country.
