"It makes alive the contents of the elements of mathematics."—Albert Einstein Taking only the most elementary knowledge for granted, Lancelot Hogben leads readers of this famous book through the whole course from simple arithmetic to calculus. His illuminating explanation is addressed to the person who wants to understand the place of mathematics in modern civilization but who has been intimidated by its supposed difficulty. Mathematics is the language of size, shape, and order—a language Hogben shows one can both master and enjoy.

Excerpt from The Master of Millions: A Novel Pentland Hills, and penetrated the homes and clothing of its worthy and unworthy burghers. One o'clock in the morning sounded asthmatically from the tower of St. Giles Church, and was slowly ratified by a wheezy response from the bell of the gray Tron Kirk. The mournful echo died away over the castle rock and around old Holyrood, and the citizens who had been aroused from their slumbers by the doleful clang pulled their nightcaps farther down and sank deeper into their feather-beds, as though to shut out from hearing and from thought the drizzling, and bedraggled night. A young man, scarce twenty-three years of age, care fully wrapped ia a riding cloak, dashed rapidly across St. Andrew's Square and sought the shadows of a narrow street. He plunged into a tortuous labyrinth of lanes and alleys and reached a gloomy space bordered on two sides by tall, dreary buildings, as forbidding and uncomfort able as stone could make them, and bounded in the rear by a wall which led to another thoroughfare on a higher level, and which was reached by a flight of steps well worn by the busy feet of more than one generation of happy, dirty children.
