"The Master Mystery" by John W. Grey and Arthur B. Reeve is the official novelization of the rare 1919 serial film starring Harry Houdini. Written as a pulp fiction type of novel, the book portrays the master magician and escape artist as a superhuman of sorts. It epitomizes the thriller film serial of the day and the radio serial of years to come. A damsel in distress, a dashing hero, and enough action to keep readers on the edges of their seats has made this book a hit since it was first released.

This early work novelized by Arthur Benjamin Reeve and John W. Grey was originally published in 1919 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. In classic adventure style, 'The Master Mystery' introduces the reader to Detective Quentin Locke who investigates a cartel protected by a robot called the Automaton, the members of which use a gaseous weapon called Madagascar madness. Arthur Benjamin Reeve was born on 15th October 1880 in New York, USA. Reeve received his University education at Princeton and upon graduating enrolled at the New York Law School. However, his career was not destined to be in the field of Law. Between 1910 and 1918 he produced 82 short stories for Cosmopolitan. During this period he also began authoring screenplays. By the end of this decade his film career was at its peak with his name appearing on seven films, most of them serials and three of them starring Harry Houdini. In 1932 he moved to Trenton to be near his alma mater. He died on 9th August 1936.

Arthur Benjamin Reeve (known simply as Arthur B. Reeve) was an American mystery writer best known for creating the character of Dr. Craig Kennedy, a scientist detective at Columbia University similar to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Thorndyke, who uses his knowledge of chemistry and psychoanalysis to solve cases, employing at time exotic devices lie detectors, gyroscopes, and portable seismographs. In fact, Professor Kennedy is sometimes called "The American Sherlock Holmes," and like Holmes he has his own Dr. Watson-like sidekick in Walter Jameson, a newspaper reporter. Reeve's fame is based on the 82 Craig Kennedy stories, published in Cosmopolitan magazine between 1910 and 1918. The Master Mystery is the novelization of a 1919 silent serial film told in 15 episodes from scenarios written by Arthur B. Reeve in collaboration with Charles A. Logue. The film stars Harry Houdini and is also known as Houdini Super-serial. It tells the story of Justice Department agent Quentin Locke as he investigates a powerful cartel protected by The Automaton, a robot. This book is illustrated with all the photographic reproduction that appeared in the original edition by GROSSET & DUNPAL, NEW YORK, 1919.

In 1919, a Canadian teenager with a sixth-grade education arrived by train to the wilds of Los Angeles. Within a decade he had transformed himself into a world-renowned luminary and occult scholar. His name was Manly Palmer Hall, author of the landmark encyclopedia The Secret Teachings of All Ages and the 20th century's most prolific writer and speaker on ancient philosophies, mysticism, and magic. Hall revealed to thousands how universal wisdom could be found in the myths and symbols of the ancient Western mystery teachings. He amassed the largest occult library west of the Mississippi and founded The Philosophical Research Society in 1934 for the purpose of providing seekers rare access to the world's wisdom literature. He became a confidante and friend to celebrities and politicians. In 1990, he died - some say he was killed - in what remains an open-ended Hollywood murder mystery. This dramatic story of Hall's life and death provides a panorama of twentieth century mysticism and an insider's view into a subculture that continues to have a profound influence on movies, television, music, books, art, and thought.

Renowned mystery author Arthur Conan Doyle and famous illusionist Harry Houdini first met in 1920, during the magician's tour of England. At the time, Conan Doyle had given up his lucrative writing career, killing off Sherlock Holmes in the process, in order to concentrate on his increasingly manic interest in Spiritualism. Houdini, who regularly conducted séances in an attempt to reach his late mother, was also infatuated with the idea of what he called a "living afterlife," though his enthusiasm came to be tempered by his ability to expose fraudulent mediums, many of whom employed crude variations of his own well-known illusions. Using previously unpublished material on the murky relationship between Houdini and Conan Doyle, this sometimes macabre, sometimes comic tale tells the fascinating story of the relationship between two of the most loved figures of the twentieth century and their pursuit of magic and lost loved ones.
