Excerpt from The Massachusetts Quarterly Review, 1848, Vol. 1 The American people are fast Opening their own destiny. Their material basis is of such extent that no folly of man can quite subvert it; for the territory is a considerable fraction of the planet, and the population neither loath nor inexpert to use their advantages. Add, that this energetic race derive an unprecedented material power from the new arts, from the expansions efl'ected by public schools, cheap postage, and a cheap press, from the telescope, the telegraph, the railroad, steamship, steamferry, steammill, from domestic architecture, chemical agriculture, from ventilation, from ice, ether, caout. Excerpt from The American Quarterly Register and Magazine, Vol. 1: May September, 1848 The plan of our work is very comprehensive, and is intended to supply the deficiency we have adverted to, and now sensibly felt and complained Of in this country. We embody within it, a digested summary of all the events that belong to the history of the times, with the documentary proof; a department of statistics embracing tabular statements, and the facts that make up the sum Of prae tical knowledge; biographical notices; original articles, and a miscellany, scientific and literary. By this arrangement, we hope, in the course of the year, to present to our readers a mass of valuable and interesting intelligence, and to form a Register and Magazine in the true sense of the terms. Excerpt from The Quarterly Review, Vol. 98: Published in December, 1855, and March, 1856 The interest of Luther's a e-tellt is that it is a perfect por trait of the human and material side of one of the greatest spiritual men that the world ever saw. F ancy, for that was one of his ways, Luther rebuking Satan in the style of Squire Western. It was his firm conviction 'that the Evil one may be driven away by meg, because he is a haughty spirit and cannot hear contempt.' Excerpt from The Quarterly Review, Vol. 30: October, 1823 and January, 1824 There would be little courage in taking up a dead man's gauntlet; but, had the author been living, we should have exa mined his book in the same temper as is now brought to the work with no hostile feeling toward him or his country, though with a natural and proper predilection for our own; willing to learn, inquire and compare; glad of whatever grounds we may perceive for believing that the Americans may become more and more an enlightened and a virtuous people; but not without a sense of sa tisfaction and thankfulness if, in those points wherein the consti tution of their society differs most essentially from ours, cause should appear for concluding that, in proportion as they have de parted from the example of the mother-country, where that exam ple might have been followed, they have gone astray. What they clued} dreaded was disorder, and they were much impressed by the turbulence, the 'fugitive and turbulent existence, ' of the ancient Republics. But these, they said, ' were not Republics, in the true sense of the name. They were 'democracies, ' com wealths of the primitive type, governed by the vote of the popular assembly, which consisted of the whole mess of male citizens met together in one place. The true Republic must tbsp be understood as a commonwealth saved from disorder by mauve institutions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Literary Magazine, 1848, Vol. 1: Monthly The apt papil of Coligni however did not forget nobler enter prises in the dazzling atmosphere of the court. He had never lost sight of the project of American discovery, and he now united with his brother Gilbert in a second expedition. Of the five ships of which this was composed, Raleigh built and fitted out the largest at his sole expense, and called it by his own name; though, in consequence, as it should soolu of the wishes of the Queen, he did not himself embark in the expedition. But a succession of disas ters attended the undertaking from the outset. An infectious dis temper broke out on board the Raleigh, and she was obliged to te turn in two days after leaving port. Gilbert proceeded on his way but, after taking possession of Newfoundland. He was obliged to abandon one of his ships, and soon after lost his largest remaining vessel somewhere ofl'the coast of Maine. Discontent, mutiny and sickness among his crew led him at length, reluctantly to abandon the idea of proceeding further south and to return to England. He was last seen on board his little bark, a vessel scarcely twice as large as the long boat of a merchantman, -encouraging his crew. And telling them we are as near to Heaven by sea as by land. But, after a night of terrible storm, when the morning dawned upon the deep, not a trace of the little bark or of the brave hearts it bore was seen again.
