Excerpt from The Love Letters of Thomas Carlyle and Jane Welsh, Vol. 2 of 2: Edited by Alexander Carlyle His anxieties relieved by receipt of Miss Welsh's last Letter. Blessed be Cadmus, who first imported letters into Europe; blessed be Jane who makes so noble a use of that invention. She transports him from the smoky furnaces of Birmingham home to clear skies and souls that love him. - What a strange tragi-comedy is that of Dugald G., which she describes so neatly and with such graphic touches! Her conduct in the affair a pretty mixture of mercy, gracefulness, and female cunning. Wishes to know to whom she is "engaged" is he a genius and "elegant"? Is he a poet or a philosopher or both in one? - Asks if she is deliberating about the task he assigned her; he win take no denial. - Is idle himself: Nondum should be his motto, with Poppies argent and three Sloths dormant on a Tree disleaved. Is growing quite an Asiatic; and alas, this is not "Araby the Blest"! - Day-dreams of becoming the interpreter of truth and manly integrity and imaginative beauty, with Jane his fair and pure Egeria, to perfect, adorn, and recompense his labours! - Is going back to London, and perhaps into Kent with Mrs. Strachey and the Orator. - She must translate something of Schiller's for the "Life"; Has many things to tell Carlyle, had she time. Has got a new Brother, the handsomest she ever saw or fancied, - Baillie by name. His want of genius alone saved her from falling seriously in love with him. Excerpt from The Love Letters of Thomas Carlyle and Jane Welsh, Vol. 1: Edited by Alexander Carlyle Few unprejudiced people will rise from a perusal of these volumes without having formed a higher opinion, a better and juster appreciation, of the noble qualities of head and heart which Carlyle and Miss Welsh have so frankly and naturally displayed in the Letters of their ante-nuptial correspondence. “Intelligent, witty, thoroughly engaging . . . the most fascinating biography I have read in years.” —The Minneapolis Star Tribune She was one of the all-time great letter writers, according to Virginia Woolf, but as the wife of Victorian literary celebrity Thomas Carlyle, Jane Welsh Carlyle has been much overlooked. In this “hugely satisfying” new biography (The Spectator), Kathy Chamberlain brings Jane out of her husband’s shadow, focusing on Carlyle as a remarkable woman and writer in her own right. Caught between her own literary aspirations and Victorian society’s oppression of women, Jane Welsh Carlyle hoped to move beyond domestic life and become a respected published writer. As she and her husband moved in exclusive London literary circles, mingling with noted authors, poets, and European revolutionaries, Carlyle created and reported to her correspondents on her rich, rewarding life in her Chelsea home—until her husband’s infatuation with a wealthy, imposing aristocratic society hostess threw her life into chaos. Through dedicated research and unparalleled access to Jane Welsh Carlyle’s private correspondence, Chamberlain presents an elegant portrait of an extraordinary woman. “Sparkles with the wit and intelligence of the subject herself . . . If you think, as I originally did, that you have no particular interest in the life of Jane Carlyle, read this—you will be captivated.” —Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lucy by the Sea “Compelling . . . illuminates the outwardly decorous but often inwardly tempestuous lives of Victorian women.” —The New Yorker “Chamberlain, Jane’s latest and incomparably best biographer . . . gives us, at last, a Jane Carlyle who seems thrillingly alive.” —Christian Science Monitor
