Excerpt from The London Bicycle Club Gazette, 1883, Vol. 6: An Official Record of the Runs, Races, and Other Doings of the L. B. C As our members will have learnt by the Hon. Sec.'s circular, the Committee have decided not to make any official nominations of Omcers or Committeemen to the next General Meeting. A feeling has pervaded the Club for some time that nominations should be made by indi vidual members and not by the Committee as a body, and we believe that it is in deference to this feeling that our present Committee have come to the conclusion expressed in the circular sent out. Whether this conclusion is wise or not will be decided by the action of the 1883 Committee, and though we are strongly of opinion that any Committee of our Club is or will be the best judge of the merits of embryo Club politicians, we must confess to a wish to see the nominations to oflice made by individual members if it is at all practicable. Nominations by a Committee must allways be liable to the suspicion of being the nomination of a clique, though there is not the least doubt that in the case of the London the suspicion is unfounded and unjust. We could wish that the rule relative to the attendance of the rank and file at Committee Meetings were less stringent, so that unofficial members could attend and judge for themselves how the business of the Club is carried on. Surely a rule which gave the Committee power to exclude ordinary members from its debates would be sufficient. Cycling is currently enjoying a boom in popularity. What are the reasons behind this phenomenon? How have perceptions and the popularity of cycling shifted? This book charts the historical development of cycling both as a leisure and sporting activity since the 19th century and explores the wider political and cultural context in which cycling in Britain emerged. In particular, it examines cycling's relationship with environmental politics and its place in popular culture. Neil Carter successfully traverses several historical sub-disciplines, including the history of transport, leisure, sport, medicine and politics, employing the analytical tools of class, gender, political culture, the role of the state and commercialism to demonstrate how British identity has shaped and been shaped by cycling. At a time when it has become part of debates over transport and health, Cycling and the British: A Modern History provides a timely and clear analysis of the changes and continuities in attitudes towards cycling.
