I propose to design the lighting for the Kent State University School of Theatre and Dance production of Jane Eyre, a musical drama as my thesis project. Director Terri Kent has stated that the production design will be a picturesque abstraction of the Bronte novel. Her vision is inspired primarily by visual descriptions in the novel. For example, the music of the score supports Jane's optimism when she is finally free of the Lowood School, just as the novel describes a detailed visual image of the garden at the school. When she first arrives, she sees the barren land, but upon leaving she sees the true beauty of the 'noble summits.' As Jane travels musically through the song, 'Sweet Liberty, ' the lighting must support the image of the land as described in the novel that she travels before she arrives at the unsettling gates of Thornfield. The lighting will provide the primary design element used in identifying the many different locations of the musical. The challenges include creating a design that supports the visual mood and locations in a "picturesque abstraction," the idea and/or feeling of the location. I will achieve this abstraction by selecting specific elements (direction, angle and texture) to represent locations and mood. This is in keeping with the director's vision for the design. The lighting design is the primary design element used in identifying the many different locations of the musical. The movement between locations is seamless within the script and score. Lighting will provide a visual transition as locations flow from one to the other and isolate playing locations within the larger context of the stage space. Another challenge is to selectively reveal the ensemble while maintaining focus on the principles. For example, in Jane's song, 'The Death of Helen Burns, ' the stage directions indicate that the ensemble "emerges from the darkness of the graveyard." Seeing the ensemble is important here as they provide Jane's inner voice. Documentation for the project Jane Eyre, a musical drama will include, but is not limited to, a concept statement, a lighting plot with paperwork; (including a channel hookup, instrument schedule, accessory hookup, color and template schedule.) I will also provide a shop order, budget sheet, magic sheet and a cue sheet.

A practical guide to the art and technique of lighting for the stage, this book explains the complex mixture of craft, collaboration and creativity behind successful lighting design. The designer paints with light - revealing form and composing a living picture from collections of objects and bodies in a given space. This handbook for professional practice walks you through how to achieve this, from first concept to development of design ideas, planning to realisation and, finally, public performance. Now fully revised, this second edition of Nick Moran's Performance Lighting Design has been brought up to date to consider advances made in the technology used for lighting design for live performance. Alongside this, Moran introduces new concepts and ways of working; includes a section on analysing the finished design; and discusses recent research into contemporary lighting practice, addressing emerging trends, particularly for drama. Combining practical information with aesthetic considerations, Performance Lighting Design is the ideal book for students and practitioners of stage lighting working on the contemporary stage.

Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare was a realized dramatic production that was presented by the University of Florida School of Theatre and Dance. Measure for Measure was presented in the Nadine MacGuire Pavillion Black Box Theatre during the Fall of 2012. The process began in the late in the Spring of 2012 and work continued throughout the summer and culminated with an opening night performance on September 14th 2012. I served as the lighting designer for this production. Executing the lighting design required collaboration with the director and design team to help bring our ideas about Measure for Measure to life. Another major portion of the process was generating a light plot and cue list as well as leading the hanging, focusing as well as all cueing sessions. The culmination of this process was an extended run of live performances September 14th to 21st of 2012

With coverage of professional theatre practices in both commercial and residential theater, this communication text emphasizes the process by which lighting designers turn their ideas about a piece into the medium of stage lighting. Design concepts are illustrated by the text's art program so that concepts are easier to apply. Review: "Essigas book is strong by emphasizing design for the play. The book provides a complete knowledge of lighting for the theatre, with strong areas in both design and technology for lighting."
