"Letters are among the most important memorials which any man can leave."--Goethe. 1. to topkest, at bremen. Leipsic, Good Friday, April 5, 1833.... I am very glad that you know the " Papillons," many of which originated in my happy Heidelberg life with you, since they must give you at least a hint of my feelings. Your review will be very acceptable. If I have room, I will add to it a Viennese one, which pleased me much. You will also find favorable notices of me in the Berlin "Iris." I have written Intermezzi (two parts, longer Papillons) and an Allegro di Bravura, of whose publication I will notify you, for the Easter fair. During the past winter, my time has been occupied by a grand orchestral symphony, which is now finished. Without vanity, I expect the utmost from it iu the future. I play the piano but little now: don't be frightened (I am resigned, and consider it a dispensation of Providence). I have a lame, broken finger on my right hand; from an injury insignificant in itself and neglect, the evil has grown so great, that I can hardly use the hand. Expect full accounts in my next letter of this, and of my present circumstances (which are very pleasant), my reception in the musical world (which could not be more encouraging), my plans for the future, and my quiet life, which, in contrast with... illegible prospects in Heidelberg, is temperate, busy, and orderly. Your letters will always reach me through Wieck. The old teacher is now my oldest friend. You probably have read about Clara: imagine the utmost, and I will subscribe to it. Moscheles has been most kind, both when we met and in regard to his music. Kalkbrenner will be here in three days. I am exchanging friendly letters wi

Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

Nineteenth-Century Choral Music is a collection of essays studying choral music making as a cultural phenomenon, one that had an impact on multiple parts of society. Rather than merely offering a collection of raw descriptions of works, the contributors focus their discussions on what these pieces reveal about their composers as craftsmen/women. Major works as well as other equally rich parts of the repertoire are discussed, including smaller choral works and contributions by composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach, Charles Stanford,
