He was a chemical philosopher with keen and originative powers. It is remarkable that he should have achieved so much when his preparation was so meagre. He blazed the way by his experimental work and in his theoretical observations in chemical constitution. His "Compendium of Chemistry," now antiquated, was a store-house of original observations.
