The 2018 Edition of Life and Times of Harry Wolf includes all 60 chapters from the Augmented Expanded Edition (with minor editorial amendments.) It also includes 5 new chapters, in which several new characters are introduced. In "Blame it on Zeus" the character Eugene Unicorn is introduced. Eugene's family business (certification of virginity) is about to suffer serious credibility problems, unless Harry can come up with one of his famous original solutions. We also meet the pop star Serena Sirena, and learn how she came to compose her hit song "Stand by your God" In "Kalvin Koppernickel" we meet a star flyball player who loses his job because he begins to engage in religious demonstrations after scoring goals. How can a wolf successfully intercede with a major sports organization? The chapter "Northern Lights" introduces talk show hosts Sam Hammity (of talk show Pig and Pals) and Steven Coldbear (whose show is called "Northern Lights") Many of Coldbear's jokes start to show too much knowledge of the activities of the Trumpeter-Swan family, and the swan wants Harry to plug the leak. In "The Odd Odyssey of Dr. Oddy Seus" we meet Penelope Seus, Dr. Oddy Seus and the witch Circe. We also learn that the hare who lost the race to the tortoise was named Harvey, and that Harvey later wrote a book named The Loneliness of the Short Distance Runner. In that book, Harvey gives (not very credible) reasons for throwing the race. A scheduled race between Oddy and Harvey is cancelled, but Oddy fails to return home. His wife, Penelope, asks Harry for help, but what can a wolf do to intercede with a powerful witch like Circe? In "The Wonderful Wizard of Ooze" Harry deals with Circe's daughter and son in law, Glinda the Good and William the Wonderful Wizard. He also meets their daughters, Wanda the Wicked Witch of the West, Nadine the Nasty Nerd of the North, Sylvia the Sly Sybil of the South and Elvira the Evil Enchantress of the East. (Actually, Harry never meets Elvira. A cropdusting aircraft piloted by a girl named Dorothy kills her before the story starts.) The killing of Elvira, and Dorothy's subsequent theft of her shoes, set off a big courtroom drama in the land of Ooze. Warning: Several of these stories have adult content.

The Edgar Award–winning, internationally bestselling author delivers a bone-chilling novel about a family held hostage in their country home. Wolf kicks off when a vagrant—the Walking Man, an enigmatic, recurring character in Hayder’s fiction—finds a dog wandering alone with a scrap of paper with the words “HELP US” attached to its collar. He’s sure it’s a desperate plea from someone in trouble and calls on Det. Inspector Jack Caffery to investigate. Caffery is reluctant to get involved—until the Walking Man promises to exchange new information regarding the childhood disappearance of Caffery’s brother. Caffery has no idea who or what he is searching for, but one thing he is sure of: it’s a race against time. Meanwhile, the Anchor-Ferrers, a wealthy local family, are fighting for their lives, held hostage in their remote home ten miles away. As their ordeal becomes increasingly bizarre and humiliating, the family begins to wonder: Is this really a random crime? “The home invasion novel to end all home invasion novels . . . Wolf is exceptionally original in premise and nightmarish in its rendering.”—BookPage

In the late 1500s in Florence, aristocrats of the Renaissance renovated classical Greek dramas into dramatic musicals and gave birth to the first operas. After centuries of transformation, the opera is still appreciated as a historically dynamic paradigm of the fine arts. Composers of the twentieth century have worked hard to fashion a voice distinct from the romantic composers of the nineteenth century and the traditions that preceded them, and this volume explores the extent of their success. Beginning with a thorough introduction to the history of operatic forms and transformation, this book presents a comprehensive discussion of twentieth century opera. Giving ear to many composers and many styles--romantic and modern and assorted variations--the discussion includes such globally renowned composers as Strauss, Puccini, Prokofiev and Mascagni, as well as the esoteric works of less famous composers. Spanning as it does from Puccini's Tosca and Charpentier's Louise to Heggie's Dead Man Walking and Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles, twentieth century operatic form has something for every taste. The discussion is therefore structured chronologically and directed at exploring this complex diversity and ingenuity of twentieth-century styles. Examples from across the globe and firsthand commentary from contemporary operatic professionals complement the discussion. Concluding chapters comment upon the operatic presence in the twenty-first century and the future of operatic forms.

**A Wall Street Journal bestseller** An updated edition of this blockbuster narrative provides the first behind-the-scenes, authoritative account of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s marriage, by the New York Times bestselling author of Diana in Private. The fall from popular grace of Prince Harry, the previously adulated brother of the heir to the British throne, as a consequence of his marriage to the beautiful and dynamic Hollywood actress and "Suits star" Meghan Markle, makes for fascinating reading in this groundbreaking book from Lady Colin Campbell, who is the New York Times bestselling biographer of books on Princess Diana, the Queen Mother, and Queen Elizabeth’s marriage. With a unique breadth of insight, Lady Colin Campbell goes behind the scenes, speaking to friends, relations, courtiers, and colleagues on both sides of the Atlantic to reveal the most unexpected royal story since King Edward VIII's abdication. She highlights the dilemmas involved and the issues that lurk beneath the surface, revealing why the couple decided to step down as senior royals. She analyses the implications of the actions of a young and ambitious Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in love with each other and with the empowering lure of fame and fortune, and leads the reader through the maze of contradictions Meghan and Harry have created—while also evoking the Californian culture that has influenced the couple's conduct. Meghan and Harry: The Real Story exposes how the royal couple tried and failed to change the royal system—by adapting it to their own needs and ambitions—and, upon failing, how they decided to create a new system—and life—for themselves.

ONE OF TIME'S 10 BEST FICTION BOOKS OF 2020. Longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR, Bustle, Good Housekeeping, the New York Public Library, Library Journal, Lit Hub, Electric Literature, and Tor.com "As enchanting as fairy tales, as mysterious as dreams, these exquisitely composed fictions are as urgent and original as any being written today.” —Sigrid Nunez, author of The Friend, winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Fiction An urgent and unsettling collection of women on the verge from Laura van den Berg, author of The Third Hotel I Hold a Wolf by the Ears, Laura van den Berg’s first story collection since her prizewinning book The Isle of Youth, draws readers into a world of wholly original, sideways ghost stories that linger in the mouth and the mind. Both timeless and urgent, these eleven stories confront misogyny, violence, and the impossible economics of America with van den Berg’s trademark spiky humor and surreal eye. Moving from the peculiarities of Florida to liminal spaces of travel in Mexico City, Sicily, and Iceland, I Hold a Wolf by the Ears is uncannily attuned to our current moment, and to the fears we reveal to no one but ourselves. In “Lizards,” a man mutes his wife’s anxieties by giving her a LaCroix-like seltzer laced with sedatives. In the title story, a woman poses as her more successful sister during a botched Italian holiday, a choice that brings about strange and destructive consequences, while in “Karolina,” a woman discovers her prickly ex-sister-in-law in the aftermath of an earthquake and is forced to face the truth about her violent brother. I Hold a Wolf by the Ears presents a collection of women on the verge, trying to grasp what’s left of life: grieving, divorced, and hyperaware, searching, vulnerable, and unhinged, they exist in a world that deviates from our own only when you look too closely. With remarkable control and transcendent talent, van den Berg dissolves, in the words of the narrator of “Slumberland,” “that border between magic and annihilation,” and further establishes herself as a defining fiction writer of our time.
