Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 1 The design of the biography of St. Teresa which is now submitted to the reader, is the same as that of the Life and Letters of St. Francis Xavier, which has now been for several years before the public. There are certain of the saints of God of whom that is pre-eminently true, which is true in a certain measure of all those whose lives and characters are such as to present interesting subjects to the student - that is, that they are but imperfectly understood unless their own letters, as well as their more formal works, are largely used by their biographers. The great typical instance of such a Saint is St. Paul himself. Nothing but a deep and familiar acquaintance with his Epistles can qualify any writer to give a fair and full account of his mind and character. It is the same with a number of other saints, of whose letters we happily possess large numbers. But the kind of biography which may thus be produced is as yet wanting in the case of most of these saints, and its composition involves great labour and requires singular judgment. Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 2 The long delay which has ensued between the publication of this volume and that of its predecessor, has not been owing to any abandonment of the design of the complete work, but mainly to an attempt to make the translation of the Letters of St. Teresa as perfect as possible, and to arrange them in such a manner as not to interfere too much with the onward progress of the narrative of her Life. But, after all, they cannot be used for this purpose as much as could be wished, and it has been found impossible to persevere with the original design of publishing all the letters in English. Such a plan would have involved the extension of the work to four or five volumes. It is with much regret that the design has been given up, and the plan followed in the present volume adopted in its place. Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Teresa, Vol. 3 Few words are needed to introduce the present volume, the last of a work which has cost more labour than appears on the surface, carried on through a number of years during which the writer has always had other matters of importance to occupy his time. The work, however, is now complete, as far as it is within his power to make it so, and if it reveals the character of St. Teresa to others as it has revealed it to her biographer, it will abundantly repay the labour that it has cost In a work begun several years ago, and carried on in the manner in which alone it has been possible to accomplish this, there will of necessity be found many small inaccuracies and mistakes which, it may be hoped, will be thought venial. This book contains Book of Her Foundations and Minor Works. Includes general and biblical index. In 1573, while staying in Salamanca to assist her nuns in the task of establishing one of her seventeen monasteries, Teresa began composing the story of their foundation. The Book of Her Foundations comprises the major portion of Volume Three. This book not only tells the story of the establishment of her monasteries but, characteristic of Teresa, digresses into counsels on prayer, love, melancholy, virtuous living and dying, plus other teachings of the Mother Foundress. This book also has an excellent introduction, chronology, and map of Teresa's foundations and journeys. Five of her brief works, including her poetry, complete ICS Publications' third volume of her Collected Works. Includes general and biblical index.

Saint Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun, and writer of the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be, along with John of the Cross, a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. In 1622, forty years after her death, she was canonized by Pope Gregory XV, and in 1970 named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. Her books, which include her autobiography, The Life of Teresa of Jesus, and her seminal work, El Castillo Interior (The Interior Castle), are an integral part of the Spanish Renaissance literature as well as Christian mysticism and Christian meditation practices as she entails in her other important work Camino de Perfección (The Way of Perfection). This book provides a collection of letters written by St. Teresa of Avila. You can purchase other religious works directly from Wyatt North Publishing.
