Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Edward A. Freeman, D. C. L., LL. D, Vol. 1 of 2 It is much to be regretted that his correspondence with some of his oldest friends has, from various causes, been lost, but a vast residuum of letters remained, which have been placed at my disposal, and I venture to hope that the careful selection which I have made from them will serve to bring out in their truest colours all the most striking features of his strong and original character. In the collection of letters and other biographical materials I received invaluable assistance from Mr. Free man's eldest daughter, the late Mrs. A. J. Evans. Never was a daughter fonder or prouder of a father than she was never did a daughter labour more assiduously than she did to help on the work which was to perpetuate her father's memory. It has been a sad thought to me in writing the following pages that they will not be read by one who took such a deep interest in the preparation for them. Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Edward Everett Hale, Vol. 1 The amount of material placed in my bands was very great. There were thousands of letters, many diaries and day-books covering almost the whole of my father's life, a great number of sermons as well as lectures and addresses, beside note-books, scrap books, common-place books, sketch-books, and other such material. His printed writings, also, were voluminous and had never been entirely collected, nor even completely catalogued. It was not pos sible for me to examine and digest all this material in the way I should have liked, nor could I, even, select all that I could have wished. I have tried.
