The first of these volumes contains the first period, and is the work of Professor Campbell; in the second, I have written the story of the Mastership; and I am responsible for the whole. The plan followed in both volumes is of course the same. A few letters have been worked into the narrative; others, far too numerous to be used in such a manner, but of a personal character, have been appended to the chapters according to their dates, and thus form as it were illustrations of the text, giving in Jowett's own words his thoughts and feelings at the time. In the second period the material was to some extent different from that in the first, for Jowett's personal memoranda became far more numerous as he grew older, and from these, as in some respects the truest record of his life, it was necessary to draw largely.
