Wherein is discoursed the fall of Loue, the Ut-ter fruites of Follies pleasure, and the repen-tant sorrowes of a reformed man. Sero, fed/erio. Robertus Greene in Artibus Magister. To the right Worshipfull Thomas Burnaby Esquier, Robert Greene wish eth increase of all honorable vertues. //? Athenians coated such men vnworthie their Common wealth as were ingratfull: and Plato seeing an vnthankefull man prosper, said, see men of Greece the Gods are prooued vniust; for they haue laden a thistle with fruite. When (right Worshipfull) these reasons entred into my reach, and that I sawe how odious in elder timi ingratejull men were to all estates and degrees; least 1 might be stained with such a hatefull blemiJh, hauing receiued many friendly, nay fatherly fauours at your hands, I resolued to indeuour how I might shewe the depth of my affetlion towards your Worfliip, I found my abilitie was not answerable to my desires to / proportionate equall requitall to your deserts, so that I onely thought to make thankes my pay mistris, and so passe ouer your good turne with the old prouerb, God and Saint Francis thank you. Yet when I perceiued great men had taken little gifts, I tooke heart at graffe, and imboldened my selfe to present you with a PamphJet of my penning, called my Nunquam sera est: which your Worship so gratefully accepted, measuring my will more than the worth; that hauing made my second part, wherein is discoursed the sequell of Francescoes/r/Afr fortunes, I thought to flirowde it vnder your patronage: I haue dijcouered herein the other follies of his youth, and how at last, repentance stroke in him such a remorse, that his sorrowe for his finnes were more than the pleasures...

Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ... GREENES VISION. Fter I was burdened with the penning of the Cobler of Canterbury, I waxed passing melancholy, as grieuing that either I mold be wrong with enuy, or wronged with suspition. But whe I entred into the consideratio, that slander spareth not Kinges, I brookt it with the more patience, & thought, that as the strongest gustes offend lesse the low shrubs than the tall Cedars: So the blemish of report would make a less scarre in a cottage than in a pallace: yet I could not but conceit it hardly, and so in a discontented humor I sat me down vpon my bed-side, and began to cal to remembrance what fond and wanton lines had past my pen, how I had bent my course to a wrong shore, as beating my brains about such vanities as were little profitable, sowing my seed in the sand and so reaping nothing but thornes and thistles. As thus I recounted ouer the follies that youth led me vnto, I stept to my Standish that stood hard by, and writ this Ode. Greenes Ode, of the vanitie of wanton writings. Hough Tytirus the Heardsfwaine, Phillis loue-mate felt the paine, That Cupid fiers in the eie, Till they loue or till they die, With pleasant voyce and cunning stripe: Telling in his song how faire, Phillis eie-browes and hir haire. How hir face past all supposes: For white Lillies: for red Roses. Though he sounded on the hils, Such fond passions as loue wils, That all the Swaines that foulded by, Flockt to heare his harmonie, And vowed by Pan that Tytirus Did Poet-like his loues difcufse, That men might learne mickle good, By the verdict of his mood; Yet olde Meneleas ouer-ag d, That many winters there had wag'd. Straigned ditties from his pipe. / Sitting by and hearing this: Said, their wordes were all amijfe. For (quoth he) such wanton laies, Are...
