Excerpt from The Library, the School and the Child In the following chapters an attempt is made to set forth the various ways in which children are being sup plied with books through the instrumentality of libraries. The subject falls naturally into well-marked divisions. The first five chapters deal with the work of the public library for children. First. As public school pupils, and, secondly, as children. The remainder of the book treats of the efforts of the state to provide books for the young through school libraries. Excerpt from The Library and the School Now there was a time in the dim and Puritan past when the reading of mere stories was looked at askance and the mental pabulum of the young was essentially didactic. But the children of today are encouraged to read Mark Twain and Stevenson and other story-tellers, and thereby books become an intimate and much-prized part of lives at a time when the young imagination is peculiarly in need of guidance. The restraint of another generation which led to surreptitious indulgence in dime novels and shockers had been replaced by wise and sym pathetic guidance. Excerpt from The Lincoln School Library One day we all went up to the library. We sat around Miss Eaton's desk and Miss Eaton told us a story of the little lame prince, how he had been shut up in a tower and couldn't see anybody and nobody could see him, and one day a fairy godmother came into the tower and brought him a magic travelling cloak, and she said he could sit on the travelling cloak and wish where he wanted to go and it would take him where he wished. After that Miss Eaton told us that we have a magic travelling cloak, just as much as the little lame prince had and what do you suppose that is? They are books. All over Miss Eaton's desk she had selected books which she thought the second grade could read and we have been deciding where we wanted to go and they have taken us all over the world. This is another way we use the library. Augustus had finished his battleship. He asked Miss Curtis to guess what he wanted to do. Miss Curtis asked, What? Augustus said, I am going to put my ship in full dress. That means with all the flags flying as they came into harbour a few days ago. Miss Curtis said, What flags do ships fly? Augustus said, I don't know. Miss Curtis asked where you can find out and Augustus said, I don't know. Miss Curtis said, You go to the library to find out things like that. He came in very early one morning. He went up to the library and came down with this book, Flags of the World. It tells you about all the flags of the navy. And that is another way we use the library for any information. In the second assembly a Shelf of Books was represented. Each grade selected one or more books and children from each grade in costume represented the book or books selected. Another group Of children, representing readers in the library and the libra rian in person, talked about the books on the shelf. The second half Of the program emphasized the importance Of taking care Of books; the sixth grade told Of the different processes which go to the making of a book; the fifth grade showed by lists and charts the increasing cost Of books; the fourth grade explained certain careless ways of treating books, which damage them and destroy the pleasure of other readers.. The material used in their talks was suggested and worked out by the children themselves. There follow some of the children's letters written to the librarian after the assembly. Each paragraph is a separate letter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Relationship Between the Library and the Public Schools: Reprints of Papers and Addresses In response to what seems to be a general demand, this first volume of the series has been devoted to the relations between the library and the school. Upon the reception accorded to it will depend the further continuance of the enterprise. I desire to acknowledge the kind advice and assist ance of library - school authorities, and in particular the aid of Miss Effie L. Power, Supervisor of Children's work in the St. Louis Public Library, which has been of great value in the selection and grouping of the material. Excerpt from School of Education Library: Textbook Collection The child is at once imaginative and matter of fact. He is interested in fables and fairy stories, and also in stories of real life. The child of seven, more frequently than the child of five, asks for true stories and for the narration of events that hap pened when father and mother were little. Excerpt from Books for Boys and Girls Approved by the Brooklyn Public Library for Use in Its Children's Rooms This is not a list of best books only. In making the selec tion the Compiler has included such titles as she believed would help in carrying out the purpose of the children's library, namely, that of being a nursery of good citizenship. In order to approach the attainment of this end it was necessary to make provision for attracting all classes of children, the untaught little ones of limited vocabulary and experience, as well as those from homes of culture. The compiler thus felt obliged to include a large number of titles which, in point of literary merit, are decidedly mediocre; but it is believed that nothing vicious or morally harmful will be found here, and that all have some distinct merit in helping us to carry out our aim. Those titles which the compiler considers so excellent that they should be selected first for any children's library, and duplicated as freely as possible, are indicated by a star. As there are frequent requests for easy books which the librarian finds it hard to supply, those in the list which can be read by children of the first three school years are designated by a c after their titles. None of the standard adult books have been included here, although a selection from the works of Scott, Dickens, the poets, etc., have been placed in each separate Children's room. A list of books which have been found practically useful for reference work with school children is added. These books are for the most part inexpensive, and the children can consult them more understandingly than the long sets in the reference room for adults. At the same time it is our constant aim to train the children, as they acquire a zest for research work, to use the main reference collection freely and independently. Lists intended for the children themselves and prepared with the view to attracting their interest will be printed by the later. Clara whitehill hunt, Superintendent J the Children '5 Department. Excerpt from Classroom Libraries for Public Schools The first purpose of this graded list is to furnish to teachers a convenient cata logue Of the books which the Public Library has to this date devoted to school use. We hope, by having such a list, to secure the aid of the teachers in the choice of each classroom library, so that the books may be suited to the age and capacity of the Children, and helpful both to teachers and pupils in connection with the course of study. The list is only tentative, and other books will be added from time to time, both from old books found to be needed and from new books published, as the wants of the schools require and the resources of the library will permit. The library will be very glad of suggestions from teachers, both as to changes in the list and the addi tion of new books. The selection of the books and the division into grades was first made on the basis of the reading from the Children's Department of the Public Library. The first selec tion and division was very carefully revised after trying the books in the classrooms of ten schools for a full year. The assignment of the books to the different grades has been changed and modified, particularly in the subjects of travel and history, to meet the requirements of the course of study. For instance, Cofiin's books on United States history have been continued into the ninth grade, although they are not above the comprehension of much younger readers, because American history is studied in this grade, and these books are found very useful and are much sought after. Librarians, superintendents of education and teachers in other cities, to whom the list may come, will find it Open to criticism, both as to books omitted, books included which perhaps should have been left out, and as to the assignment to grades. After a longer trial of the books by further use, and a larger experience by the com pilers, we will try to issue a better and fuller list with subject entries. The suggested list of reference books is also only tentative. It is added because it is a part of our plan to build up a good reference library in each school. The entire amount of the state appropriation awarded to those schools under the library care will be expended for this purpose each year, the Public Library furnishing all the books for the pupils' home reading. Excerpt from The Children's Library: A Dynamic Factor in Education This book is addressed to those interested in children, whether teachers, librarians or parents. It has not been written from the standpoint of any one group, because there seems to be a need for a study of library work with children based upon broad educational principles and concrete facts, and not upon the opinions of any one class of workers. It does not present definite conclusions or technical information which is already available; but it is submitted as a basis for further discussion. School authorities are often indifferent to the value of libraries for children; librarians are none too familiar with educational ideas and ideals, and frequently seem to judge modem education, not by its aims but by its immediate accomplishments. While the teacher is likely to underestimate the value of books other than text books, the librarian is in danger of over-emphasizing the esthetic and literary values of reading for children, and of overlooking the tremendous changes in the attitude of the educational world toward books, due to developments in sociology, psychology, applied science and industry. The statements of educators and of librarians in regard to children's reading bear an astonishing similarity; yet it seems to be the general opinion among librarians, judging from their printed words, that the school gives too little attention to the cultural side of books and reading. Excerpt from The Children's Library a Practical Manual for Public, School, and Home Libraries The brief chapters that follow may find their excuse in the fact that while articles almost innumerable on library work with children have appeared in library and other periodicals here and in America, no work has yet appeared in either country which attempts to systematise this fugitive information. I have long thought that a brief manual connecting the various methods would not be without its uses to those who are concerned as parents, teachers, or librarians with the reading of the young, and as no one better qualified has undertaken the task, I have presumed to write this little work. In the earlier chapters I have dealt with matters which should be known by all who conduct libraries whether in the school or the home; and in these I have endeavoured to avoid the special phraseology of the professional librarian. The later chapters describe practically all the methods in use in public libraries for catering for children. The whole work, however, is connected, and the non-librarian may, and I hope will, find it worth while to read it as a whole. I had intended to prefix a chapter dealing with the history of the child's book; but when I came to marshal my materials, I found it was impossible to produce anything like a readable and satisfactory sketch within the limits I had proposed to myself.
