Excerpt from Laurel Wreath: A Christmas and New Year's Gift The rail-cars snort from strand to strand Like more of Death's White Horses. So, too, in the land of the Pilgrims: her Thanks. Giving-day is not what it once was. It lacks the deep earnestness of the old Puritan piety. Men there were, that then went up to the city of their King with thanksgiving and songs of praise. What a dinner, too, was the old Thanksgiving din ner! You might fancy it a hecatomb - a free-will offering to the genius of hospitality. There was the father, venerable in form, and frosted with years, gathering around him his long line of descendants. Excerpt from The Cypress Wreath If any apology be necessary for adverting to cir cumstances, which it might be thought had been better treated with the silence Of contempt, let it be found in the sensitive delicacy of my sex, and the respectability of a condition in 'life, which, though it cannot shield me from injustice in others, teaches me to regard myself, and thus to repel in sinuations entirely and totally unfounded. Hav ing done so, at present it only remains for me, to bid the Public, respectfully, farewell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Origin of the Office of Poet Laureate In a recently published work the author has presented biographical details of the Poets Laureate of England; the object of this paper is to place before the Royal Historical Society in a concise form all the reliable information he has obtained as to the origin of the office. From the appointment of Chaucer about five hundred years have elapsed, and during that period a long line of poets have held the title of Laureate. For the first two hundred years they were some what irregularly appointed, but from the creation of Richard Edwards in 1561, they come down to the present time without interruption. The selection of the Laureate has not always been a wise one. but the list contains the names of a few of our greatest authors, and the honour was certainly worthily bestowed upon Edmund Spenser, Ben Jonson, John Dryden, Robert Southey, William Wordsworth, and Alfred Tennyson. As the custom of crowning successful poets appears to have been in use since the origin of poctry itself, the office of Poet Laureate can certainly boast of considerable antiquity, and the laurel wreath of the Greeks and Romans was an envied trophy long before our Druidical forefathers held aloft the mistletoe bough in their mystic rites. Excerpt from Christmas Carillons: And Other Poems Men give their best to them they love the best; The sceptre to the queen, the laurel-wreath To the rapt minstrel, and the jeweled sheath To him whose sword has stood the battle's test. What guerdon, then, for thee? What garland blest, What mightiest wand and blade and tempered Shield? I bring thee arms by fiercest proof annealed; I bring thee flowers nor blight nor storm may wrest. When on thy heart, triumphant from the hells Of childbirth-pain, Love's first flower thou didst bear, The miracle of this dower thy soul didst prove. O deathless joy, which motherhood foretells! Take, then, my child, as Life's divinest share, Thy sceptre, crown, and shield, a mother's love. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
